The only 2 options you have at this point are as follows, Hope to some higher power you find the key, or take it to the dealer and have a new key cut and chipped, im sure that it has a securilock system, that makes it tough, Although the key itself isnt very expensive, you have to have a key cut by code, There is a special code designated to your key that can be looked up by the vin number of the vehicle and can be cut and programed that way.

when you say "froze up"can you turn the engine over by hand?if it won't start with a key the maybe your battery and/or connections need attention or was there a flood while you were gone, for instance was the car full of water when you opened the doors?Did someone else drive it?seriously,do the dash lights come on?do the interior lights come on?As far as why, well ones never knows why things happen, lets just call it providence.

2000 Dodge Intrepid is equipped with an alarm system that is triggered
when unauthorized entry is attempted. In some situations, such as having
the Intrepid valet parked or when it is being serviced by a mechanic,
the alarm system needs to be disarmed so it doesn't go off. Disarming
the alarm will prevent it from being activated until it is armed again.
