Possible cracked sparkplug insulator. Faulty plug wires. Both can cause a backfire. I would replace the plug wires if they seem worn, and check each plug thoroughly. Good Luck

SOURCE: Can't get higher RPM's, mileage down to 5 mpg

Rob, it sounds like a throttle position switch to me. My 95 suburban with TBI had a similar problem and that fixed it. You may need a volt/ohm meter to rig it if you don't have a code reader that will monitor the values. I think the switch was about $25. Not sure if yours has a TBI or carburetor.

Good luck

SOURCE: do I need a catalytic converter

Yes but there could be other causes. A sticky fuel injector, bad fuel pump etc. Other signs of a bad catalytic converter are a smelly sulphur exhaust, a very hot exhaust throwing heat from the middle of the car. Unless there's a lot of miles on your car, I'd be surprised if it were a bad Cat. Hope this answers your question. Best of luck.

Fuel filter, plugged exhaust (even though you replaced the Cat), low compression, low fuel pressure, valve timing, MAP Sensor? Seems like it's temperature related if you can go 15-20 to start with then only 3 after that...

The Catalytic Converter is one possibility, but not likely. If when the truck bogs down, and stalls out, this could be more related to a fuel pump issue. If on your truck the fuel pump is located inside of the fuel tank, then once the pump heats up, this would happen. Acting as though it's something electrical, but it's really not.

Two possible issues. One, Your mass airflow sensor could be unplugged, dirty, or malfunctioning. Two, you could have a clogged catalytic converter. There are cleaners you can use, but generally you need to replace the catalytic converters.

This seems like you have an emissions problem and could be many things from your oxygen sensors to your catalytic converters. If your truck is under one hundred thousand miles is should still be under warrenty and the dealership should replace for free

The cylinder 7 misfire is likely a symptom of the problem, not the problem itself.

Typically, the catalytic converter has an oxygen sensor in front and behind it. When the vehicle is warm and running in closed loop mode, the upstream oxygen sensor waveform reading should fluctuate. The downstream 02 sensor reading should be fairly steady. Typically the P0420 code triggers the check engine light if the readings of the two sensors are similar. This is indicative of (among other things - such as faulty sensors in the "emissions loop") a converter that is not working as efficiently as it should be.

I do not believe that it is a problem with a valve/head gasket or cam.

Have someone do a back pressure test on you catalytic converter. I had the same problem and it turned out that my converter was almost completely plugged. I was also getting a check engine light indicating a misfire on cylinder 4. Once the converter was replaced, the problems went away.
