1996 honda civic vtec. so in the morning on my way to work my engine light came on the speedometer went crazy and the transmission started sliping.. so I took it to 3 tranmission shops they all said...


Disconnecting any sensor will cause a non working car to work suddenly.I would check two things. 1. The Transmission control module- vary rare issue. 2. the ignition control module. These break down a lot in Honda's. In the 96-98 model of the civic, the dash uses the tach built into the ignition control module. the 99-00 model doesn't use the ICM tach signal, but uses the same module. Test your ICM with a digital multi meter ($5 @ harbor frieght), before dropping $60- 140 on one.

I would say its probably a short or a ground problem at the turn switch or a wire in that area. you need a test light and probably a multi meater and some nohow a ground or wireing problem can even drive a master teck crasy.

My speed on my dash went out so as the rpm but my gas and other thing works, what could be the problem how do i fix ?


If both the speedometer and Tach quit working there is a high probability that the instrument cluster has checked out. The speedometer takes it's signal from the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) via the computer, and the tach comes from either the distributor or coils (tach pin) to the tachometer. Both these items would have to go out to cause your symptoms.

Tach does not work at all and speedometer goes on


Possible faulty ignition module. Tach output is in ignition module. Module located under coil pack. Remove and have tested at any major parts distributor for free.

COULD BE GROUND PROBLEMS OR THE TACH GOING BAD.EVEN THOUGH CAR SEEMS TO BE RUNNING GOOD IDLING GOOD.SOME TIMES A SPARK PLUG MISFIRE.CAUSING A LITTLE ROUGH IDLING CAUSING TACH NEEDLE TO GO CRAZY.I SEEN ALTERNATOR WITH VOLTAGE REGULATOR GOING BAD CAUSE A POWER SURGE CAUSING HEAD LIGHTS TO DIM A LITTLE THEN BRIGHT WHILE ENGINE IDLING.THIS WILL CAUSE TACH METER NEEDLE BOUNCE AROUND ALSO.

I'm having strange electrical problems with my Caravan. 1st the tach went crazy and quit working then the speedometer went crazy and quit working now the passenger window quit working where do I start to...


I know with the generation II caravan the Body Control Module had some strange problems. On mine the horn will not work, and the wipers work sometimes and eerily on their own. It is a known problem and there is a TSB about it.

After that, it could be a bad ground.

Speedometer/tach stopped working


There are 2 sensors on the engine that sent a signal to the computor and speedometer and tach. When one of these goes bad it can make the speedometer and tach go all over the place and also just stop working. This can also cause all types of engine running problems because the information being sent to the PCM will be incorrect all so. The units are easy to replace once you find them, it seems that they are located in different areas of the engine with each year the vehicle was put out.
