SOURCE: 1986 ford 250 pickup no gas from both gas tanks

I JUST SPENT A WEEKEND SOLVING THE ISSUES THAT SEEM TO BE THE SAME AS YOURS. FIRST THE PROCESS OF THIS MODEL IS THAT WHEN THE KEY IS PUT IN THE RUN POSITION, THE FUEL PUMPS ACTIVATE AND ONLY FILL UP THEMSELVES. WHEN THE TRUCK ENGINE IS CRANKED, THE OIL PRESSURE ACTIVATES THE SENDING UNIT AND IT ACTUALLY TELLS THE FUEL PUMPS TO KEEP PUMPING WHILE THE ENGINE KEEPS TURNING OR RUNNING. IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE, AS IN A WRECK, THE ENGINE DIES, AND THEREFORE THE FUEL TO THE ENGINE IS STOPPED, AS A FIX, TRY PRIMING THE CARB, AND SEE IF IT RUNS BRIEFLY. YOU WILL ELIMINATE ALOT OF EXTERRANEOUS ELECTRICAL ISSUES IF IT RUNS. NEXT, CHECK CONTINUITY AT THE FUEL PUMP RELAY. IT IS LOCATED UNDER A PLASTIC COVER ON THE FIREWALL TO THE RIGHT OF THE BRAKE BOOSTER PUMP. MINE HAS 5 WIRES GOING TO IT. I HAD TO UNSCREW THE COVER TO ACCESS THE HIDDEN SNAP THAT HOLDS IT IN PLACE. HAVE SOMEONE CRANK THE ENGINE AND FEEL IF THE RELAY ENERGIZES. IF IT DOESN'T, AND THIS IS WHAT WAS WRONG WITH MINE, YOU WILL NEED TO FIND AND REPLACE THE OIL PRESSURE SENDING UNIT WITH 2 WIRES. THERE ARE 2 WIRES THAT WILL LEAD YOU TO THE OIL PRESSURE SENDING UNIT FROM THE RELAY. THERE ARE 2 SENDING UNITS AND THEY ARE LOCATED AT THE REAR OF THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD, BEHIND THE CARB. THERE IS A BIG ONE, WITH ONE WIRE, WHICH IS THE OIL PRESSURE SENDING UNIT FOR THE GUAGES, BUT BELOW THAT IS ANOTHER SMALLER SENDING UNIT THAT HAS 2 WIRES GOING TO IT. IT CLOSES WHEN THE ENGINE TURNS OVER AND ACTUALLY TELLS THE FUEL PUMPS TO KEEP PUMPING GAS. SEE IF THIS WORKS. THE FUEL PUMP RELAY WAS 15 DOLLARS AND THE OIL SENDING UNIT WAS 16. SPENDING ALL WEEKEND WITH THE WIRING SCHEMATICS AND TRACING ALL OF THAT STUFF-----------PRICELESS.

SOURCE: Late 1986 ford 302, F150 pickup

sounds almost like the newer vehicles equiped with cam sensors instead of the distributer system i had a similar problem with an 87 ford bronco 2 it would stall out right around 2800 rpm i replaced the control module usually mounted on the distributer at least mine was and it fixed it right up but as for ur truck im not sure they are only like 30 bucks at autozone or something worth a try right??

Either the gauge is bad, the cable is kinked or the speedometer connector is bad...at the tranny.

SOURCE: where is the fuel tank switch for the 1986 F

it depends on what part of the switch your looking for. in the cab its on the right side of your heater control unit. but the actual switch is under the drivers side in front of the first fuel tank inset in the frame rail. it will have fuel lines going in and out and an electric connector.

How to fix gas gauge

It could either be the sending unit in the tank or the gauge itself that is bad.

Usually in older vehicles the sending unit gets worn and fails to deliver the signals that the tank is empty or full or just gets stuck in a certain position.

Your best bet is to get your hands on a Chilton or Haynes manual for your year truck and see how the gas tank comes apart (not an easy job) where more than likely the sending unit is. You can then remove the sending unit and replace it with a new one, probably can be had cheaply at an after-market parts store.

Or you can take apart the dash (not an easy job either) and test the leads on the gauge to see if that needs to be replaced.

Depending on how much work you are willing to do, you might want to just learn to estimate how much fuel your vehicle uses, even keep a notebook handy in your vehicle to track your miles after each fill-up and have a fuel can on hand in case you underestimate.

1986 (11/85) z24 model 720 Pickup. Vehicle has only 75K, which means it sits for weeks between usage. Terrible bucking and stalling, usually under heavy load (steep mountain roads). Sometimes can run...

Try running a good fuel system cleaner through it. Sitting alot allows condensation to form in fuel tank. Also condensation forms on plugs, etc... Pill plugs and inspect, but do run system cleaner regularly.

Replace the fuel filter and poor a can of Sea Foam motor treatment in a full tank of gas. Sea Foam can be picked up at any part store for $5 to $8 a can. If it still has a problem you may need to replace the spark plugs.
