This has happened to me.. Are there any lights on on the dash?? this is a very common issue in GM vehicles. Your car make and model are on the list for this. It has to do with the security system failing.. if you take it in they will charge you an arm and a leg.. I did mine at home and haven't had any issues since .. check this out im pretty sure this will be the answer to your problem. hope everything works out for u Do It Yourself GM Security bypass

Aaron, there has been a few problems with head gaskets, the bigger problem was with the intake manifold gaskets.

My 1997 Buick Century has been over-heating and running rough for a couple of weeks. I had to keep filling my coolant reservoir every 2 or 3 days. I just had a hunch and checked my dipstick and it's very...

Sounds like a blown head gasket. The head could also be cracked. If the engine hasnt been badly overheated to the point wherethe bore and rings have glazed it should be ok to replace the gasket. the head should be resurfaced and pressure tested before it is refitted. If it is a high milage engine that is burning oil I would sugest replacing the engine or if the car isnt in cood general shape selling it as is as spending large amounts of money on an engine in poor condition would be pointless.

How many miles does an 1997 Buick Lesabre usually last?

Gm says a 3800 engine should last ove 400,000 miles with normal service. This engine for 97 will probably need a new plastic intake manifold one day. They will leak coolant into the combustion chamber and some un-educated mechanics will tell you that it needs head gaskets as they don't have a head gasket problem. The oil pan may leak on this car too, replace it with a fel-pro perma dry gasket and it will stop it. Mine has 297,000+ miles on it.

What would cause coolant to get in your oil?

This is not a good thing. You have a gasket leaking somewhere (head gasket, intake gasket) or a cracked head or block possibly. Don't run it like this you will wreck the whole engine instead of just a gasket replacement. Still not easy or cheap but better than a new engine.

Just put new spark plugs in 97 buick lasabre. Car now starts and runs, but is blowing out white smoke. Is this blown head gaskets? Does it have anything to do with the fuel pump put on 3 weeks ago?

these cars have issues with coolent getting into the intake... headgaskets are not one of the issues . check plugs for coolent. upper plastic intake has coolent flow in to chambers if u will, and over time they get micro cracks and brittle ...lower intake manifold gaskets are plastic also. ..cyl. heads are cast iron not alluminum . lower intake manifold is alluminum and upper intake is plastic .. on my lesabre a plastic 90 degree elbow connected to the lower intake manifold to the heater hose housing. the belt tensioner is connected to this housing im refering to. not saying for sure, but if it is this is usually why...

Changed spark plugs in 97 buick lasabre and now it cranks and runs, but white smoke coming out. Is that blown head gaskets? Does it have anything to do with the fuel pump my mechanic put on 3 weeks ago???

You need to check the oil with the dipstick (wipe in down a few times) to see if it looks like a chockalate milk shake. If coolent has made its way into the oil you have blown head gasket. The fuel pump which is usually in the gas tank in most gm vehicles would not cause white smoke, if it failed you car would not start because your engine would not get any gas to the injectors
