Can you find or even have reverse? There is a switch(PRNDL) on the side of the transmission under the shift cable that tell the computer which gear your in. This could be bad. But check the transmission fuse first. it's marked trans or eatx. Try starting it in neutral. No start, replace the PRNDL.
can you link me to a part for the PRNDL? I think you might be talking about the neautral safety switch...
By the way, it starts in neautral, but still drives like it's in drive.
PRNDL is the neutral safety switch also. Located on the transmission under the shift cable. If you can start in neutral and not park, it is bad. Replace it. Depending on year make and model, this can affect shifting. I have found them full of water. They can cause all sorts of different shifting problems.

Hi Ken:
Sounds as if the linkage is out of adjustment. Did something specific happen to cause this to start to occur? If you look at the linkage, there will be some point where you can shorten or lengthen the rod that attaches to a lever on the transmission. One way will make it better, the other will make it worse.

Is the linkage someting I can adjust myself?
Yes, but you needto be really certain that you are working safely since the vehicle could roll. Easiest and best is to put it on a hoist with the wheels off the ground. If one person sits inside and moves the shift lever, and a second person looks at the transmission at the same time, it's not too hard to figure out where to adjust. Is there any chance you can talk to the person that sold it to you to try to find out the history? .
So I checked the linkage and it's not it. What about the celenoid?
Hi Ken: Looks like we'll need some more detail to be able to try to help you. What year, make and model? Is it mechanical or electrical shift? If there is a solenoid that does the shifting, it ultimately has to move a mechanical linkage, even if it's inside the transmission. Sounds like the transmission is OK, but the shift mechanism is not in alignment with the shift indicator/control.
Finally figured out the issue, the clutches in 1st and reverse were so burnt they welded themselves together :( Just gonna get a rebuilt and install. Thanks everyone for the comments though :) I learned stuff I wouldn't know otherwise :)
