Question about 2002 Chevrolet Silverado
I had that happen once and my windshield was covered with radiator coolant from a leak in the heater core.

Two things can cause this. First check the air plenum drain. Open the hood and on the passenger side the is a rubber tube from the firewall that points down. You will have to get under the vehicle to clean it out. Use wire to clean it out, most times it is clear close to the bottom. I have had to blow it out some times with air to clear it. Once you clear it, water starts coming out.. You don't wont to remove the tube because water could start dripping inside. Next problem would be a hole in the heater core. It can be removed with out the dash coming out. But you do need a manual for this. There is still lots of parts and screws to remove to get it out.

if you have the large cover over the ventwork on the pass side you will need to remove that cover ( some dont have the cover) there will be a narrow door with two 5.5 mm screws holding it in remove the screws and the access door 1 filter will be there and the other will be beside it

The problem is that the plastic lines that the air flows through get frail and cracks and breaks. What happens is when the hose breaks you loose vacuum and the system reverts to defrost mode. You should be able to see it from under the hood on the passengers side. You will have to find the area that is broken and then go to the parts store and get some rubber hose that will fit over the plastic hose.Take a piece of the plastic hose with you so you can get the right size hose to fit over it.This just happened to my 97 Astro van.I found the broken hose and repaired it with the rubber line and is working normal now.Hope this helps.Let me know what you find out.Good luck.

I think your problem is the head unit that selects where the air comes out ie. Face, floor, defrost, or hi-level face and floor. If that's not working then it will not let you switch location that you want the air to come out.
