Each door panel is held onto the door shell by 8 plastic retainer clips. They look like plastic screws but instead of a thread they have several concentric rings designed to be pushed in and not pulled out. Use a putty knife or tack puller to pry the retainer clips out. There are four clips along the bottom and two along each side. If you break one (or more) they'll have to be replaced. The top of each door panel has a lip that rests in a trough on the door shell near the base of the door window. Once all retainer clips are pried loose, lift the door panel up to clear it from the trough and door lock plunger. Door handles are made of plastic, if one is not working it probably needs replacing. The right side handles (front and back) are different from the Left side handles (front and back). Hope this helps.

I assume you mean the drivers door. You need to remove the door panel and there are two nuts on the inside holding it on.The door panel has three retaining screws and you need to locate and remove. You then slide the door panel up and then remove it.DON'T pry the panel out you will break it.One screw is on the bottom of the panel. You should see that one. The other ones are under the door switch area and the inside door handle trim. Some have one under the remote mirror trim but not likely. That should give you access to the door handle nuts. Good Luck and I hope this helps you. Thanks Dan

Unfortunately, This is a very common problem with Ford Explorers! Ford replaces the locks when it encounters this issue. I managed to unseize my passanger door and tailgate lock, but the drivers door lock is broken beyond repair. You can purchase new remotes for your explorer and program them very easily. SOURCE: How to replace '96 Ford Explorer driver side exterior door handle

You will need to remove the door panel to gain access to the handle. Roll the window up or down as needed to get to the nuts that attach the handle to the door. You will also need to remove a rod the goes to the door lock. You will see the rod after the door panel is removed. Good luck.

Common problem on 2001 Ford Explores. The reason why your door handle doesn't unlock the door(can't be unlocked by remote either)is due to a broken spring located on the backside of the door handel INSIDE the door. True that your one(or two) of your small exterior springs on your door handle are broken(will cause your handle to flap) but this IS NOT YOUR PROBLEM. The door locks will work if there is a bit of tension holding the handle bracket up. I know it's hard to explain without pics. but here's the ONLY WAY TO FIX THIS. It's not that hard.......... Remove the door panel, only a few screws and a few more holding trim around exit handle then, pull out "snap in" clips on bottom. With a flashlight you'll see back side of door handle. To get to that area you'll have to remove one bolt holding a window frame. Do that(with window in up position) then slide down rail, out of your way. Now, get back to handle. With your light aimed at the backside of handle left slowly the door handle as normal, and you'll realize(while looking at the mechanism) that tension(pulling down of bracket) needs to occur in order for locks(manual and remote)to work properly. Trust me.....you'll figure it out. Once you do, get a spring(pen spring, 30 cent hardware store spring, any small spring!) and hook one end to bracket and the other end to ANYTHING(OUT OF THE WAY) below the door handle thus, causing SLIGHT tension. Try your locks...THEY WILL WORK! YEAH! Replace that one window frame bolt(try your window...just the make sure), replace door panel and your done. TOTAL COST: 30 cents or FREE(if you have a small spring) Ford dealers will charge $150 to $285! Yikes!

On the inside trim, you can remove screws that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to get it off the window ledge. Pull back the weather seal and you'll be able to get to everything. Either the bolts holding the outer handle on has broken or fallen out, or the handle anchor (plastic) has broken

Have a 1999 ford explorer xlt got out of truck and the passenger door won't close tried locking and unlocking door to no avail. So now my passenger door won't close. What is wrong

It is possible the latch mechanism closed after opening the door. Get a flat blade screwdriver and stand outside your truck, looking at the door latch area. you should see a small flat arm that is making a closed loop in the area where the door striker goes. Stick the screwdriver inside the loop and gently pry outward on the loop as you pull the door handle. That loop is actually like a tongue that should flip inwards towards the truck as you pull the handle. There are a few different ways you could possibly flip the latch back, depending on the exact configuration of the latch assembly. Usually on my wife's van we have to put the screwdriver through the loop from the outside and rest the tip on the door. Then, as we pull the handle, we move the handle of the screwdriver toward the vehicle which flips the latch back down so the door striker post can go inside the latch. I hope this helps and please rate my solution - I'll wait a little while to see if it works for you - if not let me know right away and I'll try to help you figure this out. Thanks for using fixya!!!

Passenger side door will only unlock if you pull handle and only lock if you push lock down.key, switch or remote won't work.

You are on the right track.

Door panel is easy to take off. you need a screwdriver and a panel popper (or if you don't have one carefully pull the panel off with your hands, you may have to get new panel clips) ,they are cheap so no big deal.

Door won't unlatch or come open

Ford had a problem with the door handles not working properly. They are cheap plastic. If the exterior door handle is broken, you will need to drill out the rivets that hold it in, and then get the door open and the panel off. You have to disconnect the rod going to it. Then, remove the handle. If you don't want to drill again, I suggest replacing the rivets with a bolt and nut easily obtainable at your hardware store. I've found that a M7 bolt works very well. If you are having a problem with the interior door handle, it's the same problem. Remember to check your door latch because if your exterior handle is broken, then your latch isn't working properly. I got one at Ford for about 40 bucks.
