Question about Saturn SC1

What would cause my 2001 Saturn Sc1 to overheat without leaking antifreeze?

My car is not leaking any antifreeze out of it, but it steadily loses it somewhere and continuously over heats.

Most likely your thermostat is bad should be a housing on the engine end of the top radiator hose theres two or three bolts

97 saturn sl the temp light and the low fluid light both come on and flash togather what is going on antifreeze is up and its not over heating

There could be air in the system and a leak that will eventually cause an overheat condition.

The recovery tank for the antifreeze has a sensor in it to tell when the fluid is low.

the intake manifold gasket at cylinder #1 shifted over and is causing a vacuum leak,,,,,if its a SL1,SC1,SW1,,the single cam engines only had this issue not the twin cam,you need a new intake manifold gasket, gasket is like $20-$40,,but labor is about $450 unless you can do it,but its very involved

I have a 1996 sc1 that needs a new starter. Do I need to pull the engine to replace it or can it be done without pulling the engine?

it will come off without pulling the engine but not without some effort you may have to take the engine mount lose on one side and raise it up about 2-3 inches

It is probably a vacuum-controlled device; look for vacuum leaks under the hood or a ruptured vacuum reserve canister; the connectors are often fragile and break off.

2001 Pontiac Sunfire is dumping antifreeze out the overflow. Could it be something other than thermostat?

Common causes include: leak from engine, hoses, etc. causing overheat due to low coolant, electric fan not coming on, internally obstructed radiator, external obstruction to radiator (leaves paper. plastic bag on front of radiator of stuck between radiator and A/C condenser), bad thermostat and last, blown head gasket. Proper testing for any and all these conditions will give you the answer you are looking for. If the antifreeze is overflowing without any overheat, it can either be over-full, or in some cases, a head gasket can do this by filling the cooling system with exhaust and driving the coolant out.

Saturn sc1, oil leaking into antifreeze

We just went through the same thing on our 1997 SC1, replaced the head gasket and the oil in the coolant issue persisted.

Pulled a cylinder head out of a 1995 wagon and put it in, the problem has cleared up after a LOT of flushing with powered automatic dishwasher machine detergent and water. We also replaced the upper and lower radiator hoses, thermostat and water pump once the flushings were complete.
