Knocking when you are starting it? The teeth plate (don't know English name) where the starter touch motor to make it turn on. It must be broken or loose.
Knocking in idle and you can not identify the source? Look the idle. Pulley, if belt or pulley"jump" with knock, it is the cause
Touch the time black cover with motor in idle. If Knocking is in a regular pattern, your motor is broken. If erratic and feel the knock at hand when you hear it, probably a Pulley is begin to damage( all, steering pump, air...)

If you can not identify the origen, most probable cause is the idle poley. Change it before it broke or you will need a trailer
