Why won't the engine turn when a large wrench is applied to the crankshaft end?

Engine guy says the engine is screwed. Is it locked up or is there another answer?

Best way to check remove all spark plugs before trying to turn the engine over. If it does not turn, Go to your Napa Auto Zone where ever you can find mystery oil it say this and its red add 3 to 6 oz to each cylinder let this sit for 2 days then come back on the 2nd day fill each cylinder to the top each one will take a different amount of oil after doing this put the plugs in just start them in their threads no need to tighten them. Let this stand for 7 days come back pull the plugs then lay down with a socket and ratchet with a pipe or plenty of leverage to turn the crank if the wrench does not work if you have a compressor get yourself a blow nozel that will slide down the spark plug hole and will reach the plug threads with a big rubber tip to kind of seal the compressed air into the cylinder just squeeze air into each cylinder many times each over and over some times this will break loose a seized engine its worth a try anyway your not out of anything for trying.

  • Insert the square tip of a 1/2-inch socket wrench into the square hole in the center of the serpentine belt's adjustment pulley. The adjustment pulley is the smallest pulley the belt wraps around.
  • Pull the adjustment pulley toward the engine with the socket wrench to release the tension on the serpentine belt, then pull the belt off the air conditioning compressor's pulley.

Procedure
- Remove valve timing housing > Chapter.
- To turn crankshaft, reinstall bearing bush, crankshaft pulley -2- and crankshaft bolt -3- and securely tighten crankshaft bolt (use counterhold 3415).
- Remove spark plug from No. 1 cylinder. Use puller -T10094 A- and spark plug wrench 3122 B.
- Screw dial gauge adapter -T10170- into spark plug hole to stop.
- Screw dial gauge -VAS 6079- and extension -T10170/1- in to stop and lock in position with lock nut -arrow-.
- Turn crankshaft in direction of engine rotation, to TDC No. 1 cylinder. Note position of small needle on dial gauge.
- Then turn crankshaft back 45° opposite direction of engine rotation.
- Press tensioning guide rail -1- in direction of arrow and lock piston with locking pin -T40011-.
- Mark direction of rotation of timing chain -3- using felt-tip marker.
- Remove bolts -2- and remove camshaft sprocket -1- with timing chain -3-. Counterhold using counterhold tool -T10172-.
- Renew bolts -2-. Tighten bolt -2- to 50 Nm (use counterhold -T10172-).
- Turn inlet and exhaust camshafts until camshaft clamp -T10171- can be pushed into holes in camshaft to stop.
Locking pins -arrows 1- must engage in holes -arrows 2-. Inscription "TOP"-arrow 3- must be readable from above.
Note
Camshafts must not be pushed axially whilst turning.
- Install a M6 bolt -arrow- hand-tight (do not tighten) to secure camshaft clamp -T10171-.
- Remove camshaft sprocket bolts. It is absolutely necessary to use counterhold tool -T10172- for this.
Note
Camshaft clamp -T10171- must not be used as a counterhold tool.
- Remove one camshaft sprocket.
- Place timing chain over camshaft sprockets, observing chain direction of rotation, and install camshaft sprocket again.
- Tighten camshaft bolts until camshaft sprockets can still just be turned on camshafts.
- Tension timing chain by removing locking pin -T40011-.
- Turn crankshaft in engine direction of rotation to TDC No. 1 cylinder. Permissible deviation from TDC No. 1 cylinder: ±0.01 mm.
Note
If crankshaft is turned more than 0.01 mm past TDC, then turn crankshaft back 45° against engine direction of rotation. Then turn crankshaft in direction of engine rotation to TDC No. 1 cylinder.
- Hold camshaft sprockets -1- and -4- in this position with counterhold -T10172- then tighten bolts -2- to 50 Nm.
Note
Crankshaft must not move and timing chain -3- must remain tensioned on both sides when tightening camshaft bolts.
- Remove camshaft clamp -T10171-.
- Turn crankshaft two rotations in direction of engine rotation to TDC No. 1 cylinder. Permissible deviation from TDC No. 1 cylinder: ±0.01 mm.
- Insert camshaft clamp -T10171- to stop in camshaft openings.
If camshaft clamp -T10171- cannot be fitted
- Repeat adjustment.
If camshaft clamp -T10171- can be fitted
- Remove camshaft clamp -T10171-, hold camshaft sprockets with counterhold tool -T10172- and tighten bolts -2- a 1/4 turn (90°) further with a rigid wrench.
Note
Camshaft sprockets must not move on camshaft whilst tightening.
- Turn crankshaft two rotations again, in engine direction of rotation, to TDC No. 1 cylinder. Permissible deviation from TDC No. 1 cylinder: ±0.01 mm.
- Insert camshaft clamp -T10171- to stop in camshaft openings.
If camshaft clamp -T10171- cannot be fitted
- Repeat adjustment.
Further assembly is basically the reverse of the dismantling procedure. In the process, note the following:
t Installing valve timing housing > Chapter.
t Installing poly V-belt > Chapter.
t Renew oil seals for camshaft sealing cover and oil them before fitting.

1998 mazda millenia will not crank


If the engine overheated and now won't crank, you may have locked it up. If you can't turn the alternator or the crankshaft with a wrench, the engine may be trash.
One of the cylinders could also be full of coolant from a blown head gasket.

Place the crankshaft pulley bolt removal tool over the end of the crankshaft bolt. Tool will hold the pulley in place while you apply torque to the bolt with an impact wrench. Start the air compressor by plugging it in and turn it on. Set the pressure of the compressor on the highest setting. Attach air hose on the air compressor to the air inlet and the locking mechanism using the quick-connect lock on the end of the air compressor hose. Set the impact wrench to turn counterclockwise. Spray the crankshaft bolt with penetrating oil. Make sure you soak the bolt head in oil so that it is easier for the wrench to remove. Secure the socket end of the wrench to the pulley bolt and pull the trigger on the impact wrench. You might need to reapply penetrating oil several times during this process to loosen the bolt up. Eventually, the bolt will come off 215 lbs torque, and simply stated righty tighty, lefty loosy. Hope this will assist you.

What do they mean by rotating the engine by hand?


This means you put a large socket wrench on the bolt inside the cavity of the front pulley on the crankshaft and using the large socket wrench you turn the engine over with brute strength.

If you are unsure what you are doing then please go out and buy a haines workshop manual as these tell you every detail you need to know so that would be your best solution.

Timing Belt - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

2.8L SOHC (AFC) V6 Engine
  1. Note the radio security code and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Place the (hood) lock carrier in the service position. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): Body And Trim, Service Position, Front Bumper, Hood Lock Carrier.
  3. Remove the engine accessory drive belt. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): General Information And Maintenance, Routing Maintenance And Tune-up.
  4. Turn the engine by hand to Top Dead Center (TDC) on the firing stroke for cylinder No. 1.
NOTE The large holes in the camshaft sprocket lock plates should be on the inside facing one another.
  1. Remove the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor from the lower left side of the engine block. Make sure the engine is at TDC and install the threaded crankshaft holding pin Tool No. 3242 and lightly tighten.
  2. Remove the upper timing belt covers, the crankshaft vibration damper and then the lower timing belt cover.
  3. Loosen the camshaft sprocket bolts slightly and use a suitable pulley to release the sprockets from the tapered ends of the camshafts.
  4. Loosen the tensioner roller and remove the drive belt.
To install :
  1. Install the timing belt over the sprockets, then the idler rollers and lastly over the tensioner.
  2. Install camshaft alignment tool holder Tool No. 3243 into the camshaft alignment flanges.
  3. Check and adjust the cam belt tension such that the upper left portion of the belt between the tensioner and the left cam gear can just be twisted 90° ( 1 / 4 turn).
  4. Tighten the cam belt tensioning roller to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm), and the camshaft sprocket bolts.
  5. The balance of the installation is in reverse order of removal.

2.8L DOHC 5V (AHA) V6 Engine
  1. Note the radio security code and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Place the (hood) lock carrier in the service position. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): Body And Trim, Service Position, Front Bumper, Hood Lock Carrier.
  3. Remove the engine accessory drive belt. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): General Information And Maintenance, Routing Maintenance And Tune-up.

  1. On the cylinder block near the crankshaft, remove the sealing plug from the lower left side of the engine block. Make sure the engine is at TDC and install the threaded crankshaft holding pin Tool No. 3242 and lightly tighten.
  2. Remove the upper timing belt covers, the crankshaft vibration damper and then the lower timing belt cover.
  3. Loosen the camshaft sprocket bolts slightly and use a suitable pulley to release the sprockets from the tapered ends of the camshafts.
  4. Using a 8mm Allen® wrench, rotate the timing belt tensioner roller clockwise until the tensioner is compressed; then, insert a 2mm spring pin through the tensioner housing and tensioner plunger to secure it in place. When the plunger is secure, release the wrench tension.
  5. Remove the damper-to-crankshaft bolts and the damper.
NOTE It is not necessary to remove the center bolt when removing the crankshaft damper.
  1. Remove the serpentine belt idler and the crankshaft damper guard.
  2. Mark the running direction of the timing belt and remove it from the pulleys.

To install:
  1. Make sure that the camshaft pulleys and the crankshaft pulley are in alignment with TDC of the No. 1 cylinder's compression stroke.
  2. Install the timing belt; make sure the timing belt is installed in the correct running direction from which it was removed.
  3. Using a 8mm Allen® wrench, rotate the timing belt tensioner roller clockwise until the tensioner is compressed; then, remove the 2mm spring pin from the tensioner housing. Slowly, release the tensioner spring pressure to put pressure on the timing belt.
  4. Install the crankshaft damper guard and the serpentine belt idler pulley; torque the idler pulley bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  5. Install the crankshaft damper and torque the damper-to-crankshaft bolts to 15 ft. lbs. If the damper-to-crankshaft center bolt was removed, torque it to 147 ft. lbs. (200 Nm) plus 180° 1 / 2 turn).
  6. Remove the Crankshaft Holder tool No. 3242 and install the sealing plug.
  7. Replace the remaining components by reversing the removal procedures.
  8. Refill the cooling system and the automatic transaxle. Connect the electrical connectors. Install the negative battery cable last.
  9. Test drive the vehicle.
