Maybe your ac rotory switch. They are made of plastic and sometimes crack. Try pulling knob off to see if thats what happened. If so a new switch is pretty cheap to replace.

Ac blows when driving down the road but not when idle. Does it just need charged?

Check the AC's drive belt tension, it may be slipping or the compressor's clutch may be failing.

Either source would show up with a strobe light..

When I turn on the a/c the car gets hot

Check your electric cooling fan on the radiator to make sure it comes on when you have the ac turned on . This is a common problem with a lot of cars that have an electric fan they may not over heat while driving down the road until you put a pull on the moter like the ac running . And it may have 2 fans and only one working

When i turn on ac the engine idle goes down and almost dies. it also happens when driving down the road

The throttle body needs to be cleaned, grime in this area prevents the throttle plate from closing completely and allowing air to enter, making the air/fuel mixture lean.

1990 Geo Metro. Driving down the road with the a/c on the car loses power and starts slowing down. Also hear a sound, like compressed air being released the wife says under the car behind the front seats,...

It sounds like the ac compressor is building up to much head pressure.Check the cooling fans to see if they come on when the ac is turned on.The cooling fan should come on when the ac is turned on.This keeps the head pressure down so the freon keeps cool enough to cool the vehicle.Check the cooling fan,or fans to see if they are working when the ac is on,let me know if I can help you any more.

Whining noice while driving down the road.

It might be your AC compressor. When it makes this sound, turn the AC blower to O or OFF and see if it stops the noise. If it does, then see your local dealer or respected auto AC specialist.
