What's the make and model of the car? Does the rest of the speedometer work? If it's not an electronic odometer, does the odo just not move?

Oooo! I had that happen. BMV was not happy. They thought I had tampered with it. I wouldn't know how to do that. Turns out it was a broken plastic part that no one had... Good hunting!

Have a 1988 Silverado the speedomoter works but the odometer dont. The mileage never changes

You should be happy about this, the gear on the mileage may have broken or there are to many miles on it where it doesn't work anymore.

Speedmeter dont work ,the milege dont move and i cant tell how much am driving at mile/hr.

Sounds like you have a bad vehicle speed sensor which will also cause your odometer (the mileage guage) not to function as well. The sensor mounts near the back of the transmission

Im buying a motor at the junk yard it has 98000 miles do i need to buy the odometer or just the icm so i know how many miles are on the motor im buying i dont want to have my old odometer reading since...

It is illegal to change the Cluster or modify the odometer reading , unless the mileage on the cluster in your car now is documented, the mileage and date of the new cluster when installed is also documented. You do not have to change the cluster just because you change the motor. The mileage only is there for the vehicle not for the engine. Hope this helps, Not sure if you were asking about the legal aspects. Cobra.. :-)

My odometer quit working first then my speedometer quit working please help i can't afford to have a shop fix it.

well its not expensive...all it should be is the cable inside the transmission that measures the speed and/or mileage of the car...tell them you need it fixed and make sure you dont overpay for it to be done

Maintenence light

I get many calls a week for this procedure...
This is really easy! Follow these directions:

Turn the key ON

Look at the odometer, and verify that it displays "ODO" and the total mileage traveled. If it is on "Trip A" or "Trip B", press the black stick next to the odometer to read "ODO", and the total miles traveled.

Turn the key OFF.

Press in, and HOLD the black trip meter reset button, hold it in.
DO not release it.

Turn the key ON; do not start the car.

Observe the Odometer display. The total mileage traveled will disappear, and you will see 5 dashes, then 4, then 3, then 2, then 1 dash, and finally, 5 zeros. Then, the total mileage traveled will redisplay.

Release the black trip meter reset stick.

This completes the reset procedure, and it will be back on in 5,000 miles, to remind you of you next oil change.

Hope this helps!
