Question about 2001 Buick Regal

How to fix whinning noise when car is accelerating, or turning? Is the whinning noise an electrical issue, fuel pump, power related, etc.?

Whinning noise when driving or turning, but when at a stop, so quiet you would think the car is off. Also not sure if its related but, once gas tank reaches about 1/4 tank, the engine sputters from 2nd to 3rd gear. It seems to do it less when I keep the aftermarket radio off I didnt put it in, bought car used, allowing gas to get to almost E, before sputtering or choking.

if it is the alternator is there anything I can do in the meantime to preserve it and also is there a way to rule out the alternator?

if there is no repair or service history , then the 1st thing you should do is replace the vehicles fuel filter , first and foremost , also fuel tanks should never be emptied past 1/4 tank , the fuel pump needs a certain fuel level in the tank to keep the fuel pump cooled , any less than that and you run the risk of burning out the fuel pump and they are expensive

if the engine sputters with the radio on, then it is in fact the alternator that is failing ( bearings )when the bearing do fail you will hear a loud screeching from the engine compartment

The whining noise is your engines alternator bearings
they are worn out , the alternator is close to failure
it is barely producing any voltage
( the battery light in the dash only indicates that the alternator is no longer generating any amperage )

Have very loud whinning noise on2000 saturn sc1.9 sohc can intake gasket cause this sound or a tensioner

Tensioner, alternator, power steering pump, water pump. All of these can cause this. Using either a mechanics stethoscope or a long screw drive (place you screwdriver near not on the pulley if each decice. Then place you ear to the handle..the screwdriver will transmit any sounds to your ear. Always be careful of clothing, jewelery hair etc so I'd doesn't get caught in the belts or pulleys) locate what is making the noise and replace.

1988. Why won't it start?

Follow fuel line to carburetor and take it loose, there should be a fuel filter there. Try changing it.

Have whinning noise when turning right or slowing down sounds like a power steering noise in rear end

A whinning noise while turning is an indication of a worn bearing. The extra pressure put against the bearing/race during the turn and the closing of a gap creates this noise.I would chech the axle bearings on the side of the truck on the outside the curve when you hear it. What I'm saying is if you hear it when you turn left....check the right side bearing

New power steering pump put in, lines bleed, and still having whinning noise. Is there another part with the power steering pump we can check?

are you sure the noise is comming from pump and not the belt tension pulley right next to it ?

I use a wiffle ball bat with both end caps cut off (hollow tube) held to my ear to help localize noises on running engines I have even found tricky intake vac leaks with that trick
