It's not the coils. Clean the throttle body(inside) and the mass air flow(MAF) sensor. Use brake clean. Spray the MAF on both sides. Use a tooth brush and clean the throttle inside as far as you can. Also clean the back of the throttle plate and especially were it seats against the body. Also hit the idle air control motor(IAC) with cleaner. It will take a second or two to start up. Rev it up and spray the brake clean into the throttle. Try not to let it die. This works every time, unless there are vacuum problems. Check them next.

My check engine light comes on and flashes on and off on my Ford f-150 1998, and it hesitates or stumbles. The engine size is 4.6 triton V8.

There is a few things that cause this. It could be spark plugs/coils and wire. You might need a tune up. It could be simple as a clogged air filter or fuel filter. You could also have an vaccum leak or leaking fuel injectors. You need to get the code scanned. Your light is on Matthews because your computer detected a problem. Autozone checks them for free. This way, it gives you an idea of where to start. Otherwise, it is a guessing game unless you check each part. That cost time and much money. See what code you get and if you still need help, you can write me or others at any time. You can do visual checks on the wire, air filter, fuel filter, and checking for a leak. This could very well be the problem. If you have the code, we know where to start.

I have a 06 ford f150 with the triton 4.6L v8 I need to know if it is the 3v or not any visual clues would be helpful

Unless I am missing the product years, the 3V 4.6 V8 was not in the F-150 until the 2009 and newer MY F-150s. Up to 2009, the 4.6 L v8 was the 2 V design that was used from 1997 to 2008.

The 3 valve 4.6L V-8 started in the 2005 Mustang and then was introduced to other models.

If my memory serves me right your van has a carburator. The stumble is in there. Take it to a reputable shop that specializes in rebuilding carbs and fuel systems. Time has taken its toll on yours but a good cleaning and rebuild should cure your stumble. Hope this helps.
