Over full ?was truck ever submerged in water? have you changed fluid ? or front dif building to much internal heat and in turn needs a place for expansion so it is coming out vent

manual transmission --- 80w-90 for the gearbox and transfer case
diff is 80-90 oep if a straight diff and different if a limited slip diff gear box is around the 2.5 ltrs as is the diff each
LiSiD oil can be used in LiSiD diffs and straight diffs but straight oil cannot be used in lisid diffs
the transfer case uses the same as the box but the quantity you will have to check in the lubrication section of the user manual
many user manuals recommend a lighter straight oil for transfer cases and boxes ( 30 straight oil) but I find that the light oil promotes bearing wear and gear problems as the oil squeezes out under load

some trans dont have dip-stick tubes any more they are checked and topped off from under car when serviced also atf oil is very thin and has alot of detergents as compared to 90wt gear oil, i would drain and refill front diff. yes.

When I put my 2005 jeep grand cherokee in reverse and turn at the same time it clunks in the rear end, the service 4 wheel drive light came on and the service electric brake system light came on


I have the same vehicle, with the same issue. I had put the car on a rack and lifted it to pin point the cause of the clunk when shifting from park to reverse or reverse to drive. I found that the front diff mounts were grenaded, meaning they needed to be replace bad. with these mounts being bad it was causing the front diff housing to slam the frame up and down when shifting from park or reverse to drive. this is pretty expensive to fix, your talking $160 in parts and $540 in labor. I also had the service 4WD warning display on my dash cluster, i had the code read. It came up as a bad solenoid in the rear diff. this is about $200 parts and labor to fix. Also, dont know how many miles are on your jeep but if you've ever sub-merged your axles under water or if your over 60,000 miles you need to replace your gear oil in the front diff, rear diff and transfer case. This is a little costly to have a mechanic do as well because you're supposed to use synthetic gear oil. For a shop to do it you're looking at $360.

My 4WD does not work, no light on dashboard


Two things happen when you select 4WD in this car. Moving the transfer lever physically selects the gears that will turn the prop shaft to the front diff. At the same time, a switch in the transfer box tells a pump to supply pressure to the diff engagement diaphragm in the front diff housing. This joins the diff spider gears to the front drive shafts. Once the air pressure remains fixed, the 4WD light on the dash will remain lit solid. Obviously, a number of problems could be causing your lack of 4WD. The most common would be the air line(s) from the pump (behind the front bumper, LH side usually) to the diff being pulled off, cut, or crushed during 4WD'ing. Failure of the pump, the relay control unit that powers the pump, the switch that turns it on and off are all possibilities too. As you have no 4WD lamp on the dash, you may have a blown globe too (unlikely) as this should flash if air pressure can't be maintained. You would still have 4WD! See if you can select 4WD with the ignition OFF and listen for any relay or pump noise. I'm not sure you can actually do this without the engine running, but it will be a lot easier to hear with the engine off. If you can hear the pump and everything else is OK, The problem may actually be in the diff. Good luck.

4wd works but light flashing in 4wd high and low


The front diff engages drive with air pressure supplied by a pump behind the front bumper. Air is supplied to the diff through a pressure switching/valve unit and rubber hoses to the diff that run under the car. These can be damaged whilst off-roading and the pump unit will have to remain on for longer to maintain 4WD. The loss in pressure or the longer time that the pump is on for is reflected in the flashing 4WD lamp. I'd be checking all hoses and connections under the car. The other thing that may have happened is water may have got into the switching unit and it is giving an error code.

HI you can confirm if is front diff by removing diff cover if you seefine metal shaving in you gear oil you know is bad commend problems pinion bearings and ring and pinion

Front end does not engage in 4-wheel drive


The front diff in this model requires air pressure to engage. There is an electric pump for this purpose and once the pressure rises and remains where it's meant to, the pump shuts off and the dash light indicating 4WD will remain lit. It is sealed. There should be no leaks. If there is air coming out the top, do you mean out of the diff breather pipe? (The diff breather should be connected to a hose that goes up and is clipped next to the radiator.) If it is coming out of the diff breather, you have a punctured (worn out) diff engaging diaphragm which can only be replaced by stripping the diff casing.

I have had the same problem with my Jimmy. While on a road trip in 2WD same as you, I slowed down for gas and same thing, nasty grinding. The problem is the collar that engages the front differential was grinding against the gear, eventually causing it to weld itself together. Putting the vehicle in 4WD takes the pressure off the fork which slides the collar over the gear. THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM is the air actuated switch on the transfer case, which is directly controlled by the switch on your dash. This switch gets hung up half way and causes the fork in the diff to move half way, which is where you get your grinding. Its incomplete meshing of the gears. The fork in the front diff is controlled by air from the air switch (or vacuum, lack of air, I cant remember) Take your jimmy to your local trans. and gear shop and have them check it out. The switch on the transfer case costed me $40 and replacing the bad gear and collar in the diff costed me $280. I did not have to rebuild the entire diff. Make sure you are not paying for parts you do not need. ask lots of questions!
