Ignition Coils/Modules
The electronic ignition system uses an individual ignition coil for each cylinder. There are two separate ignition module assemblies located in the camshaft cover of each cylinder bank. Each ignition module assembly contains an ignition control module and four ignition coils. Each ignition coil connects directly to a spark plug using a boot. This arrangement eliminates the need for secondary ignition wires. The ignition module assemblies receive power from a fused ignition feed. Both ignition module assemblies connect to chassis ground. A Reference Low and four ignition control (IC) circuits connect each ignition module assembly to the PCM. The PCM uses the individual IC circuits to control coil sequencing and spark timing for each ignition coil. The IC circuits transmit timing pulses from the PCM to the ignition control module to trigger the ignition coil and fire the spark plug. The PCM controls ignition system sequencing and timing events

2009 PontG64cyl misfiring on 3rd cylinder Codes p0300, p0303, and p0353.(its chugging at this point) My question is do I just go ahead and change the coil pack or do I start somewhere else? Thanks!


Before replacing the coil , to make sure that's what's wrong ,switch it to another cylinder to see if the problem moves to that cylinder ! This DTC is for a circuit control problem , DTC P0353: Ignition Coil 3 Control Circuit
I have seen lose wire connections cause misfires , there is a four wire connector at the coil marked A,B,C,D . C is L-BU that is the control wire from the PCM - engine computer . So basically it's saying there is a problem with that circuit !
The ignition system uses individual ignition coil/module assemblies for each cylinder. The engine control module (ECM) controls the individual coils by transmitting timing pulses on the ignition control (IC) circuit of each ignition coil/module to enable a spark event. The ECM monitors each IC circuit for improper voltage levels. Each ignition coil/module has the following circuits:

But change the coil to a different cylinder an see if the problem moves to that cylinder !

Disengage the wiring harness connector from the ignition coil.
Disconnect the ignition wire from the coil.
Remove the coil mounting bracket bolts, then remove the coil and mounting bracket assembly from the vehicle.
The ignition coil can be separated from the mounting bracket.

To install:

If separated, loosely mount the ignition coil to the mounting bracket.
Loosely install the coil and mounting bracket assembly to the intake manifold. Tighten the coil mounting bracket-to-intake manifold bolts to 115 inch lbs. (13 Nm) and the ignition coil-to-mounting bracket fasteners to 96 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
Connect the ignition wire to the coil.
Engage the wiring harness connector to the ignition coil.
If removed, install the windshield wiper/motor module assembly.
Connect the negative battery cable.

My 1985 2.5 s-10 wont spray gas through the throttlebody but pumps from the fuel pump what would make it do this i can straight wire it to the battery and it will spray someone told me it could be the...


Using a test light, and with the ignition key in the "On" or "Run" position check for full battery voltage at the (+) positive side of the ignition coil, and then check for full battery voltage at the wire connector to the distributor for the wire that runs between the (+) positive side of the ignition coil and the distributor. (dis-connect the wire connector from the distributor to test) If full battery voltage is present at the (+) positive side of the ignition coil but not through the ignition coil to the distributor then replace the ignition coil. If full battery voltage is present at both the ignition coil and the distributor then remove the ignition module from the distributor to have it tested and most auto part stores will test it for you for free. The ignition module is what generates the signal that the ECM uses to time and fire the fuel injectors, and be certain that the ignition module is installed into the distributor using a silicone grease or some other die-electric compound to completely cover the metal mounting surface of the ignition module because it is a heat-sink, and be careful not to over-tighten the ignition module or it can be damaged. There is also a hall-effect switch inside of that distributor that would be the next suspect if the ignition module tests out alright, and if there is no spark there is a pick-up coil/stator assembly that could be faulty and if that is the case then replace the entire distributor because the distributor will have to be removed and dis-assembled to replace the pick-up coil/stator assembly.

I am looking for a spark plug wiring diagram for 1997 buick park ave 3.8 to see if the wires may be crossed.


Sometimes the coil packs are numbered from the factory --- Firing Order 1-6-5-4-3-2
Ignition Coil Removal & Installation To Remove:

  2. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the coils
  3. Remove the fasteners securing the coil(s)
  4. Remove the coil(s) from the ignition control module
To Install:
  1. Install the coil(s) to the ignition module
  2. Install the coil fasteners
    • Torque to 40 in-lbs (4.5 Nm)
  3. Connect the spark plug wires to coil assemblies

  3. Disconnect the 14-way connector from the ignition module
  4. Note the position of the spark plug wires and disconnect from the coils

  6. Remove the coils and the Ignition module from the bracket
To Install:
  1. Install the coils and the ignition module to the bracket
  2. Install the fasteners that retain the ignition coils to the ignition module
    • Torque the fasteners to 40 in-lbs (4.5 Nm)
  3. Install the nuts and washers that retain the ignition module to the bracket
    • Torque the screws to 70 in-lbs (8 Nm)
  4. Connect the spark plug wires to the coils assemblies
  5. Connect the 14-way connector to the ignition module
    • Torque the screw to 19 in-lbs (2.1 Nm)

Toyota Camry 1983-1996 Repair Guide Ignition Module - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

External
All engines, except the 2S-ELC, have an external igniter.
  1. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Separate the wiring harness connections.
  3. Unbolt the igniter.
  4. Loosen the nut holding the wire lead onto the coil.
  5. Tag and disconnect the wire lead.
  6. Lift the igniter off its mount.

To install:
  1. Mount the igniter to the bracket.
  2. Attach the wire lead to the coil.
  3. Connect the harness.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable. Reset any digital equipment such as radio memory and the clock if necessary.

Internal
REMOVING IGNITER WITH DISTRIBUTOR
See Figure 1
The internal igniter is only applicable to 2S-ELC engine Camry models. All other engines are equipped with an external igniter assembly.
Review the complete service procedure before this repair. Note position, color of wire and routing of all internal distributor assembly wiring.
  1. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.
  2. Remove the number one spark plug. Place a finger over the spark plug hole and rotate the crankshaft clockwise to top dead center. When there is pressure felt on the finger at the spark plug hole, this will be top dead center of the compression stroke on number one cylinder. If not, repeat the procedure. Install the number one spark plug.
  3. Mark the position of the distributor flange in relation to the camshaft housing. Remove the IIA distributor assembly.
  4. Remove the distributor cap with the wires attached, and remove the packing. Mark the position of the rotor relative to the housing and pull the rotor straight up and off the shaft. The distributor cap is held to the housing with three retaining screws.
  5. Remove the ignition coil dust cover.
  6. Remove the two nuts and spring washers and disconnect the four wires from the terminals on the side of the ignition coil. The wires are color coded yellow, blue, brown and red.
  7. Remove the four retaining screws and remove the ignition coil and packing.
  8. Remove the nuts and disconnect the pink, white and black wires from the igniter terminals. Remove the two igniter retaining screws and remove the igniter.

To install:
  1. Attach the new igniter with the two retaining screws. Connect the pink, black and white wires to their respective terminals and install the nuts. Make sure that the pick-up coil wires are secured in their clips and that there is slack in the wires.
  2. Install the ignition coil and attach it with the four retaining screws.
  3. Connect the four ignition coil wires to their respective terminals and install the two nuts and spring washers.
  4. Install the coil dust cover and push the rotor onto the shaft.
  5. Place the distributor cap and wires into position. Install and tighten the retaining screws.
  6. Install the distributor assembly and connect the negative battery cable.
  7. Connect a tachometer and timing light to the engine and adjust the ignition timing.

  1. Reset any digital equipment such as radio memory and the clock if necessary.

REMOVING IGNITER WITHOUT REMOVING DISTRIBUTOR
  1. Remove the distributor cap, rotor and di-electric insulator covers. Disconnect the red and yellow wires from the coil and the pink, white and black wires from the igniter.
  2. Remove the igniter. It may be necessary to mark and rotate the distributor to gain access to the igniter retaining screws. The timing should be checked after the distributor is returned to the mark.

To install:
  1. Install the new igniter using the two new retaining screws.
  2. Twist the pick-up coil wires together, install the white wire first then pink and black wires to their original locations. Make sure the wires do not touch the housing generator or advance plate.
  3. Route the red and yellow wires from the igniter so they do not contact moving parts. Connect the red wire to the right coil terminal (with the brown wire) and the yellow wire to the left terminal (with the blue wire). Replace the covers, rotor and cap.
  4. Connect a tachometer and timing light to the engine and adjust the ignition timing.

  1. Easy job and should have no problems here some help
    Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Detach the engine control sensor wiring connector from the ignition control module by pressing down on the locking tab where it is stamped PUSH, and remove the connector.
  3. Remove the ignition module and the module bracket from the front fender apron.
  4. Unfasten the two ignition module retaining screws, then remove the ignition module form the module bracket.

To install:

  1. Install the ignition module onto the module bracket. Tighten the retaining screws to 24-33 inch lbs. (2.7-3.7 Nm).
  2. Position the ignition module and bracket assembly onto the front fender apron. Secure with the retaining bolt and tighten to 35-50 inch lbs. (4-5.6 Nm).
  3. Attach the engine control sensor wiring connector to the ignition module.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.

Removal Procedure
  1. Remove all the electrical connectors at the ignition control module.
  2. Note position of spark plug wires for installation
  3. Remove the spark plug wires from ignition coils.
  4. Remove the screws securing coil assemblies to ignition control module.
  5. Disconnect coils from ignition control module. Installation Procedure
    1. Install the coils to ignition control module.
    2. Install the screws and tighten to 4-5 Nm (36-44 lb. in.) .
    3. Install the fasteners securing assembly to engine and tighten to 8 Nm (70 lb. in.) .
    4. Install the spark plug wires as noted during removal.
    5. Install the electrical connectors to the ignition control module
