Question about Cars & Trucks
You didn't mention what brand or model you have , but as with most cars and trucks if transmission is not in park or neutral the starter will not engage , this is a safety system and should not be bypassed , but out of habit (a good one) I still allways have my foot on brake when starting anything

I had the same problem and once I wiggled the shifter enough to get it out of park then the key stuck in the ignition started.

There is a little button in front of the shifter. I pushed on this while moving the shifter back and forth. It immediately went down and I was able to put he car in park and then pulled out the key.

you have either a faulty shifter assembly or the ignition shift interlock cable that runs between ignition cylinder and shifter assembly it is very common for the cables that causes this.

ok sounds like the transmission might be your problem
first you would need to change the transmission filer by pulling the transmission plate and draining and replace filter and fluids new fluids prefferably. if that doesnt fix it. you could have a sensor or computer part out only real way to know is to take to shop to get looked at. hope this helps good luck
