SOURCE: vw 2000 jetta tdi (a/t shifting problem)

Your right in as much as it shouldnt need complete over haul but a competent auto trans technician to clear the shift fault. It could be a solenoid or check valve that should be able to be repaired with out the transmission having to be removed.

SOURCE: Transmission / RPM

These cars have a lock up torque converter meaning 4 gear going above 35 to 40 MPH, the engine and transmission lock together and turn at the same rate. I know that older GM cars had a plug that needed to be plugged into the transmission for the lock function to work on the torque converter and if you unplugged it the RPM's would run high as you describe. I have never had a 1999 Silhouette and I'm not 100% sure that these cars have that type of plug but it sounds like that type of problem. I agree with you. You know your car and I would take it to a transmission mechanic and describe your problem to them.

Good luck!

96 gm trucks had a proble with third gear burning out because of a ground issue from pcm..there was a bulletin for adding a new ground for third gear control circuit...aftermarket trans shops do not remember this problem and it is often overlooked..take to local dealership and you should be able to get problem resolved

Shifting

Is your code reader capable of reading U, C, and B codes? The speedometer doesn't get it's speed reading from the wheel sensors. It gets it from the transmission. Not shifting past 2nd gear means your transmission is in "limp in" mode. It prevents shifting to avoid further damage. I see a transmission repair shop in your future.

the new transmission. the tcm and pcm dont recognize the new transmission.by transmission being new.the transmission shift controls has to be reprogram to shift correctly.most all the late 90s and 2000s models gm vechicle.you install new parts they have to be reprogrammed.new vechicles transmission has to reprogrammed.like back in 50s 60s 70s 80s you could buy another transmission may sure it had fluid in it.you install new transmission and drive off on your way no troubles at all. but now is a different ball game. you install new parts. you need special diagnostic equipment to reprogram in new parts to pcm before it will shift right.

The throttle valve cable controls the transmission pressure. Adjusting this cable is the most important step when installing a 700R4 or 200R4 transmission.

has anybody checked to see if any wires were pinched in the bell housing. this is something that the people who installed the transmission should have addressed. the rebuilt trans. should have come with a new torque convertor. did it? youre heading in the right direction though.

Ford is very common for tranny problems. Most likely your tranny will have to be rebuilt. As a mechanic myself, I would suggest taking to tranny specialist to see if i needs to be rebuilt, or if the electrical unit is faulty. It will have to be tested with voltmeter/ohmmeter/multi-tester

Could be a solenoid in the tranny, or the throttle position sensor need calibrating.
