This sounds vary unuseal. You say it dose the same thing in nuetral but you can shift the transmisstion still .
I would jack the thing up disconnect the drive shaft and see how well the wheels turn .
If it dosen't turn freely then the problem is in the carreir the meatball or wheel bearings .Make sure you test all wheels also check your parking brake it could be frozen the cables sometimes stick permintaly.
If this isn't it its time for a rebuilt transmission .you can shift it most of the time locked up transmissions don't tend to shift to well .

SOURCE: jaguar x-type 2001 engine running okay

This car uses a ZF6HP26 transmission. In this trans, it utilizes a bridge seal that, if broken will not allow the transmission to shift from park(ZF part number 0501215718). This is a system that should not be tampered with if you have no experience with them. Find a trusted and reliable technician who can specialize in these and will make short work of this for you. It could also be in the column mount switch but more likely in the trans itself. Let me know if what the trans shop says, you do not agree with and would like a second opinion.

SOURCE: starts fine runs fine pull in gear it goes dead

Hi Brent: I'm no mechanic but I would look for a vacuum leak. I had a old car that did this to me. Started and idled strong but you couldn't put it in gear or it would die. After weeks of various male friends looking at it one finally found the problem. Turns out it was a vacuum leak or Vacuum Modulator. I found this page online that might help... It explains how auto trans work... etc. Hope it helps.

I have a 2001 Mercury Cougar. It throws code p1780. I have replaced the Neutral Safety switch and still throwing the same code.

The overdrive button is different than a neutral start switch. Your problem could be underneath the car where the transmission wires plug in.

Change fluid in transale in now it wont up shift

You may not have enough fluid in there. Once it has been filled, move the shifter through the gears, low, 2, Drive, neutral, reverse to move the fluid. Recheck. Good luck.

try starting in neutral and see if it helps. Could be a bad starter solenoid or corroded battery cables at battery. Clean the connections at the battery including the 2 small ones on the positive post.

idl air control (IAC),may be bad, also, check the EGR valve, and all vacuum lines going and coming from the throttle body. yu can test the EGR,just try pushing the diaphram by hand from beneath. if you can move it easily its good,if its hard,or doesnt move,ot needs repaced. also a pcv valve and air filter are good ideas, considering you have replaced 80% of the emission system already.

Car will not shift into gear

Sounds like a linkage/cable to me. Disconnect the linkage at the transmission and move the shift actuator by hand to see if there is the same things happening. Don't try to do this with the engine running unless someone is holding the brake inside the car.
