Question about 1996 Toyota Avalon

2 Answers

I just purchased the little beauty and I'm trying to get things working on it. Major issue is odometers aren't working and the backup lights are out. Need "how to's" for both.

If it is not a digital odo, which I do not believe it is, does the speedometer work ? if not i would check out the output speed sensor on the transmission. If the speedometer does work give this company a shout they may be able to help you out.

Is the odometer digital? (does it display numbers on a screen?) If so, check the fuses, assuming you haven't already. Same thing for the backup lights. And, believe it or not, they could both be on the same fuse.
Fuses are usually by your left knee while driving. There might also be some under the hood, usually in front of the driver, but not always.

Testimonial: "odometer and trip odometer are analog, rolling numbers. Have checked the interior fuses and on the lid it shows "Tail" but nothing indicating which part. The brake and signal lights do work well. I will check the engine compartment fuses."

    Thank you Spencer

Oh, my bad! I misread "odometer" as "speedometer". And since it is analog, please disregard.

Buick odometer

if your refering to the light on the odometer and its dark there is a little resister on the back of the cluster that you cannot fix yourself unless your an electronic oriented person. this happened to me. I went on ebay and bought another one and it worked about 2 years and not its the same thing, black with no light. I read some where these are warranteed for life by buick and they have to replace them but that was around 8 years ago and not sure if it still applys.

How Odometers Work?

Mechanical odometers have been counting the miles for centuries. Although they are a dying breed, they are incredibly cool because they are so simple! A mechanical odometer is nothing more than a gear train with an incredible gear ratio.

Some odometer has a 1690:1 gear reduction! That means the input shaft of this odometer has to spin 1,690 times before the odometer will register 1 mile.

Odometers like this are being replaced by digital odometers that provide more features and cost less, but they aren't nearly as cool.

Check engine light comes on flashes 3 times

first you have to diagnose the cause of trouble.
How to get the codes on a 1998-1999 Dakota: Depress the trip reset and trip/odometer switches, and, while holding them, turn the ignition to ON/RUN, and wait about 5 seconds. This sends the car through a short self-test sequence that lights all segments of the odometer and shift selector read-out (where applicable). It will then display the stored error codes.
If that doesn't work, try holding in the trip/odometer button while doing the key on/off cycle 3 time. If that doesn't work, some people have reported success by doing the key on/off cycle 10 times instead of 3.
you are unable to pull the trouble codes yourself, wether it be because you aren't doing the procedure right or perhaps your truck doesn't have that feature, most auto parts stores have scanners and will pull your trouble codes for free. I know for sure that Autozone does this, and have heard that many others do as well. (They do this for free because they are hoping that if it turns out to be a bad oxygen sensor, for example, that you will purchase an oxygen sensor from them.) You can also purchase a scanner of your own;

My toyota corolla 2006 model has the maint. required lights on. what does that mean?

It means your car needs an oil change, based on mileage. If you take your car to get the oil changed, they can reset the light for you. If you want the light off now, try holding in the odometer reset button, with the key on but engine off, until little dashes appear then one by one dissapear. This procedure may need to be done either on the odometer total mileage or trip A mileage or trip B mileage.

Step 1: Have car off.

Step 2: Push and hold in trip reset button.

Step 3: While still holding button in, turn key to ON, but engine off. Wait for the little dashes to appear and disapear. If it doesn't work on the odometer setting. before turning key off, switch to Trip A setting. If the procedure doesn't work on the odometer setting or Trip A, try Trip B setting.

Step 4: Turn key off. Then start car. Maint. required light should be off.

Driving normal, at 80 kms, car seems to studder a bit, (gas wise) engine light comes on. Stop car, re-start, everything fine, no engine light, at 60 kms, fine, get up to 80 km, engine light comes on and...

First try replacing air filter if not done recently $30, next consider bad fuel put in fuel from major oil company from station with many patrons. Then you need to look at fuel delivery system including fuel filter and furl pump. But first try the 2 things mentioned.

Spedometer stopped working

do you have an electronic digital odometer or a mechanical one?

if it is an electronic one, it would be a little bit complicated but if it is a mechanical one, then it is just a broken cable.

the check engine light could be a coincidence , try resseting it by removing the battery for 10 minutes and putting it bak. if you have a major sensor problem then the light would come back on.

i hope i was able to answer ur question
