If there is a motor mount on top and if it is in the way of the work being performed,then yes it does.

no year make model

for example, in some GM models with transverse v6 or v8 engines, you may have to remove a front dogbone, engine strut to pivot the engine to get to the back cylinder head

but mostly people use a variety of U-joints and extensions on their sockets to get those hard-to-reach valve cover bolts

Removal Procedure
Remove the case side cover. Refer to Control Valve Body Cover Replacement .

Important: Lock steering wheel in centered position with wheels straight ahead.
Remove the engine dress cover.
Remove the air cleaner intake duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Inlet Duct Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L or Air Cleaner Inlet Duct Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.8L.
Remove the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.1L or Engine Mount Strut Replacement - Right Side and Engine Mount Strut Replacement - Left Side in Engine Mechanical - 3.8L.
Important: For supercharged engines, remove the throttle cable bracket.
Disconnect the shift cable bracket.
Remove the transaxle top side cover bolt.
Install the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture in Engine Mechanical - 3.1L or Engine Support Fixture in Engine Mechanical - 3.8L.
Disconnect the transmission wiring harness connector.
Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
Remove the left front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
Remove the left inner splash shield 3 push pins.
Loosen the wheel speed sensor harness from the 5 retainers at the cradle.
Remove the transmission support to cradle nuts only. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement .
Raise the vehicle.
Remove the front splash shield 5 bolts.
Loosen the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.1L or Engine Mount and Bracket Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.8L.
Remove the stabilizer bolts and reposition the stabilizer.
Remove the steering gear cradle bolts, then support gear before lowering cradle.
Support the left side of the frame with a jackstand.
Remove the left side frame bolts. DO NOT loosen the right front or the right rear frame bolts. Refer to Frame Replacement in Frame and Underbody.
Remove the left ball joint from the steering knuckle.
Position the drain pan under the transaxle.
Remove the left drive axle from the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Drive Axle.
Secure the drive axle to the steering knuckle/strut.
Adjust the jackstand to lower the left side of the frame until it hangs free. Remove jack stand.
Lower vehicle to access engine support fixture.
Lower the engine/transmission assembly with the engine support fixture to gain access to remaining side cover bolts.
If replacing the side cover, remove 4 engine mount bracket bolts.
Remove the harness retainer.
Raise vehicle to access side cover bolts.
Remove the case side cover bolts (56-58).
Remove the case side cover pan (53).
Remove the case side cover gasket (54).
Clean the case.
Clean the side cover gasket mating surfaces.

Disconnect the wiring harness assembly from the fluid temperature sensor (391).
Remove the fluid temperature sensor (391).
Installation Procedure
Install the fluid temperature sensor (391).
Connect the wiring harness assembly to the with fluid temperature sensor (391).
Install the case side cover. Refer to Control Valve Body Cover Replacement .
Important: It is recommended that transmission adaptive pressure (TAP) information be reset. Resetting the TAP values using a scan tool will erase all learned values in all cells. As a result, The ECM, PCM or TCM will need to relearn TAP values. Transmission performance may be affected as new TAP values are learned.
Reset the TAP values. Refer to Transmission Adaptive Functions .

Leaking valve cover gaskets - repair estimate $1000.00. Is it worth it?


no it is not worth that much, you can do it yourself for about 20-40 dollars (price of the gaskets)

Removal & Installation2.0L Spi Engine
  1. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the engine air cleaner to valve cover hose from the valve cover.
  2. Remove the two ignition wire separators from the valve cover. Position the spark plug wires aside.
  3. Remove the three valve cover bolts and remove the valve cover and gasket.

To install:

CAUTION Do not use abrasive grinding discs to remove gasket material; only use manual scrapers. Do not scratch or gouge aluminum sealing surfaces or oil leaks may occur.

NOTE Do not use any sealer with a silicone-type gasket.
  1. Install the three valve cover bolts and remove the valve cover and gasket.
  2. Install the two ignition wire separators from the valve cover.
  3. Tighten the clamp and disconnect the engine air cleaner to valve cover hose from the valve cover.

2.0L Zetec Engine
  1. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation hose from the fitting on the valve cover.
  2. Disconnect the wiring connector at the oil control solenoid.
  3. Disconnect the speed control (if equipped) and the accelerator control cable.
  4. Position aside the accelerator cable.
  5. If equipped, disconnect the speed control cable from the bracket and position aside.
  6. Remove the ignition wires from the spark plugs.
  7. Remove the bolts and position the upper timing belt cover away from the valve cover.
  8. Remove the valve cover.
  9. Fully loosen the ten bolts.
  10. Remove the valve cover and valve cover gasket.
  11. Inspect the valve cover for damage. Install new cover as required.
    CAUTION Do not scratch or gouge aluminum sealing surfaces or oil leaks may occur.
  12. Clean and inspect the sealing surfaces of the valve cover and the cylinder head. Both surfaces must be clean and flat.

To install:
  1. The valve cover gasket and the valve cover must be installed and the bolts tightened to specification within four minutes of sealant application.
  2. Apply a 0.1 inch (3mm) bead of silicone sealant in two places where the front camshaft bearing cap meets the cylinder head.
  3. Install the valve cover.
  4. Position the valve cover gasket.
  5. Position the valve cover.
  6. Tighten bolts in the sequence shown.

  7. Install the upper timing belt cover bolts.
  8. Install the ignition wires.
  9. Connect the oil control solenoid connector.
  10. Connect the crankcase ventilation hose.
  11. Connect the speed control (if equipped) and the accelerator control cables.
  12. If equipped, connect the speed control cable to the bracket.

Valve cover is leaking oil on my 2000 1.9 TDI Passat. Have changed the gasket but still leaking badly. Have been told to change whole cover but VW want £120,00 Any ideas?


will try to help.if it's only the valve cover leaking,i'm guessing they sold you the rubber one that says ne rtv sealant needed. take your back off, try not to break the rubber seal when removing!clean the top of head where gasket goes. clean the valve cover really good!clean the grooves out that the gasket slides into. buy some blue trv glue, apply a thin coat to top of head, let it setup while you apply another thin coat to valve cover, let set 10mins. apply gasket to valve cover making sure to push the gasket into the grooves on valve cover. don't worry about neatness. let the valve cover set on a hard surface with the gasket against the hard flat surface[such as a garage floor,or clean driveway] after10 more minutes install the valve cover,make sure and take your time. place valve cover onto motor,than hand start each bolt to insure thay are going into the prope bolt holes. after you have each bolt hand started, start at center of valve cover snugging the bolts down to motor. do not crank down or apply excessive force when tightening those bolts. you should see some of that blue rtv glue coming out around the valve cover when applying torque to the valve cover bolts. only secure them snug at first. let car set for 15mins. start car and look for leaks around the cover, do not over tighten those bolts but you may need to look for a leak, go to bolt closest to leak and turn it 1/4 at a time until leak stops. but if you do this step by step, you'll not have a leak issue. you may have pinched the gasket when you replaced it. hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com

Need to change valve cover gasket


the valve cover gasket should be simple enough.

1. Locate the valve cover, and clear the way for it to come out.
2. Loosen the valve cover bolts in an even fashion.
3. clean and scrape the gasket surface on both the head, and the valve cover.
4. replace in opposite order.

Could you give me the steps toinstall a new valve cover gasket, please.


Basically, remove anything that obstructs the cover and will prevent the easy removal and reinstallation.

In dealing with the main part, preparing and sealing the valve cover:

NOTE: some engines use jusr RTV as the gasket itself, others use a gasket and a coating of RTV. The amount of RTV is the difference and without a gasket, it is necessary to allow the thicker bead of RTV to set up longer before applying the two pieces together and installing the bolts.

On to the standard valve cover with a gasket.

If the cover is not a cast material, then make sure you turn the cover upside down and carefully flatten any overtightened spots where it is bolted to the head. You want the gasket area smooth and clean of any wax, oil, grease, or debris. You also want the mounting surface to be clean of oils and grease, etc., and smooth before installing the new gasket.

New gaskets leak due to improper surface prep more than any other reason!

Once the mating surfaces are clean, place the valve cover against the area it mounts to, without the gasket to make sure it isn't warped or bent causing other problems, if it's straight, apply RTV to the Valve Cover first, then installing the gasket into that part after letting the RTV sit for a minute or two you can apply the RTV to the bottom side where it will mate to the engine surface, just a thin coat should be fine, allow it to set a minute or two after making a smooth sealing surface and install. (I prefer Copper Plus for valve covers, it's orange Hi-Temp and seals well)

Do not overtighten the valve cover mounting bolts/nuts. They only get tightened to "snug", not to a torque setting as it will bend the valve cover, causing leaks. Tighten from the middle bottom, then top, then work from left to right outwards keeping the pressure even and only making things snug.

Once done, allow engine to sit a few hours for the RTV to set up after reassembling the items you had to remove to gain clearance.

If the surfaces were clean and smooth, the gasket had a light coat of
RTV on both sides-there is no reason for any leakage due to the gasket. After letting the RTV set, re-tighten, or snug the mounting bolts again, start the engine and warm up, shouldn't have any leaks. Once cool, re-check the same mounting bolts to make sure they are evenly snug.

(Things change after heat is applied and then they cool, this is just preventative maintanance)

A Vacuum gauge will identify any exhaust problems/restrictions that would cause gaskets to leak, should you encounter leakage soon after repairs.

Replacing the valve cover gasket on a gm 3800


support engine and remove front engine mounts, you'll have to remove your upper intake and some EVAP hoses, some other parts mounted to your intake and your ignition module from the rear valve cover the bolts should be either 8mm or 10mm, make sure to clean the valve cover of all old gasket material before reinstalling with new gaskets!

The PCV Valve is located under hood, center, upper engine area, top of engine, mounted in passenger side of intake manifold.

The low gas mileage and the versatility that your 1995 through 1999 Geo Tracker offers are two benefits of owning it. The maintenance needs to be kept up on your Geo Tracker. One form of this maintenance is to replace the valve cover gasket once you have driven 100,000 miles or more.
  1. Allow your engine to cool. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the air inlet hose and air intake case or air cleaner housing. Detach the PCV valve hose from the PCV valve. Separate and remove the spark plug wires and the accelerator cable from their clips.
  2. Loosen and remove the valve cover bolts. Lift the cover up and off. Using a flathead screwdriver, gently nudge the gasket out of the gasket seating area. Using automotive engine cleaner and a clean cloth rag, clean the gasket seating area.
  3. Place the new gasket in the gasket seating area. Put the cover back into place. Put the bolts in and then using a torque wrench tighten them. Do not over tighten the bolts or the gasket will not fit correctly. Reconnect the spark plug wires and the accelerator cable in the holding clips.
  4. Reconnect the rubber hose to the PCV valve. Install the air intake case, or air cleaner housing, and the air inlet hose. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Add oil to the car and start the engine. Allow the car to run 10 to 15 minutes. This will allow the oil to lubricate the engine while it moves to the top.

Head Gasket?? Valve cover Gasket???


most likely it is the valve cover gasket. it covers the valve train where there is alot of oil to lube the top of the motor. if the head gasket was leaking it may have more signs of running poorly. also having coolant leaks also. so i will have to say valve cover gasket. now usally you may have a oil burning smell with it depending on the area of the lek but not always.

the valve cover can easily be seen when the hood is open. it is right on the top and where it meets the clyinder head is where the gasket is and the leak can be seen.

Oil leaking out of valve cover gasket


It is a Valve Cover Gasket. You can get a new one at any Auto Parts Store. To make this repair last longer, Do not get the Cheap one, Get a Felpro Gasket and it will Quadrupel the Gasket Life. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

Replace valve cover gaskets on subaru svx


the truth about thse engines is they are hard to work on. if the valve covers are unbolted and still ****, try getting a rectangular peice of wood and putting it on the side of the cover neer the gasget, tap on the other end with a hammmer from all angles to try to break the seal.

this is a common problem with valve covers that havent ever been removed and they heat up, and cool down so many times they practically bake onto the head
