but, if you're a real tech, this site is the wrong way to go with this vehicle. plus this is just a vague question to begin with... I expect that from a layman driver that doesn't know how to Google search

you just made a vague question without saying you verified no check engine light or trouble codes stored on the cars computer or verify that all the ground circuits were clean... etc why a FORUMN is more suitable

INTERMITTENT problems are one of the hardest type to fix online...

you'll just either have to bite the bullet and take it to a competent shop

it's a Jag, be prepared to fork $$$$

also, goto Jaguar owners forums so you can make a dialoge instead of one-answer sites like this

i'd start with checking the ground circuits, beginning at the battery

any check engine lights/ scan the car's ecm/ecu for any trouble codes to help you look for the particular circuit to trace the problem

Choked and died while idling ,i try to start it again wouldnt start ,could itbe a timing belt ??

More likely it is a fuel problem. but could be a spark problem (timing belt has to do with spark) or least likely it could be the air intake. To check if you have the proper spark (coming due to a good timing belt) pull the number one spark plug and use a gapping tool (it's cheap tool but works good) to check the spark plug. If the spark plug has the correct gap then turn the key to watch if it sparks if it does't spark try a new plug if that doesn't spark you may need a timing belt. To check if it is the timing belt you do not really need to check the gap of the plug but if you already have the plug out and it is not the timing belt this information could be very useful. With more info I could probably narrow it down for you, post back if you like.

Will not start

have spark at 1 cyl or ALL?
which of the 5 engines.
never post engine problems without your engine options
the VIN? (digit 8? is engine code)
or the displacement.?
or hood tag, shows honda engine code. F22, 23, 27, 30?

ok if you have spark times 4 or 6
and if engine has good 60k mile tune up. then spark is good
after all a tune up is not just throwing parts, its checking spark too and timing. (if timing is found way off, the timing belt is slipped and boom blown motor next, so I always check timing, (spark) .
next is fuel, (we pretend compression is good and walk the line of dreams) and
check for dry spark tips or wet
dry no fuel, try test fuel.
soaking in raw fuel, timing belt slipped, or just flooding from bad fuel
or its -30F outside and running summer fuel?

ill let you watch scotty, (its generic, and assume engine is good)

Can a timing chain being installed wrong on a 305 Chevy motor cause weak spark or no spark

A timing chain could be put on wrong, for sure but it has ab solutely no control over spark. Weak or no spark is an ignition problem, the timing chain only controls where everything is when the spark occurs.

1992 geo storm replaced distributer have fire out of coil wire but no fire spark plug wire module in distributer checks out

storm is an ISUZU
and had 3engines,which one? below is off wiki on storm.
1.6 L SOHC 4XE1 I4
1.6 L DOHC 4XE1 I4
1.8 L DOHC 4XF1 I4

coil makes 50,000 volts (even 1kv makes fire, but is too weak spark
spark plugs dead , right? all 4 right?
ever do a 60k mile tune up ? if not why not, it gets new spark parts then..
also, if the cam timing is off. the dizzy sparks between towers
make the distributor useless, it cant distribute spark.
so the first tests are .
static ignition timing. (yes, a tool, called a timing light for $20)
if timing is good the the wires HV are bad.
if timing is bad, bingo..... this is the first test on any motor.
if the timing belt or chain on any SOHC or DOHC engine slips
the dizzy will be way to h3ll off.
learn to use a timing light, and works 100% cranking.

look at that distributor cap (replace it)
see the coil wire , center, that is at 50kv spark.
and see that rotor, if the spark is good at the cap pins 1 to 4
then the dizzy is timed.
if the spark dont reach the spark plugs that means
the wire are bad or the spark plugs are shorted, or both.
its that simple. using a real spark testing tools tells you the KV.
kv = kilovolts. the best tools $5 bucks have and adjustable gap
this car is not 100kv, like newer cars and must be set (tool) to 50kv or tad less to show full powerful spark.

take care not to get shocked, keep hands off the parts
as friend cranks (or remote start button tool)

Car not starting

a huge list but can be done in the macro format.
1: lost compression, or cam timing way off.
2: lost spark, check for spark at each spark plug.
3: spark timing way off, check timing.
4: fueling bad. (check fuel pressure)
no fuel injections at all or weak.? ( more tests)
flooding. (black fuel soaked spark plugs?)
that is all there is.

My car will not start, it turns over but wont ignite. i have changed the plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, and ignition coil. i am at a loss on what else could be causing this.

fuses, relay, corrosion at wire connections, ignition switch, pick up coil, ignition control module. Is the distributor rotor turning when you crank the engine? I ask this because a broken timing belt would cause a no start condition.

Gasoline in one spark plug

Use a timing light to determine if the problem is the plug, or the wire. Hook the timing light to the suspicious wire, and see if there is spark, or if you don't have a timing light, stick a spark plug in the wire and turn the engine over to see if it sparks. If you have spark, then it pretty much has to be a faulty plug.

Backfire through engine on 1992 olds silhouette when hitting the gas pedal fast

The mechanic should check on the distributor assembly and the spark plug ,spark plug cable. You should set first the distributor shaft rotate it counter clock wise or clock wise . according to the way you will set the spark plug to connect on the distributor assembly. If the timing will be 1342 there for the timing on the shaft should be set at the 1st spark plug and spark plug cable. When you hit the gas pedal it will back fire because of the distributor assembly and the spark plug is not set on timing or proper timing for compression.

I need to know the timing sequence for a 1998 Mercury Mystique 2 liter

ignition timing or valve timing?

ignition timing not setable.

info:
The ignition system consists of an ignition coil, spark plug wires and spark plugs.
The crankshaft position sensor signal is the basis for ignition timing calculations. The alternating voltage signal from the crankshaft position sensor is digitized by the powertrain control module. This digitized signal is then used to position the closing time of the primary circuit of the ignition coil.
Ignition angle is determined by the powertrain control module in response to engine operating conditions. Once ignition angle has been determined, the powertrain control module interrupts the current to the primary circuit of the ignition coil thus triggering the ignition spark which is supplied to the cylinders through the spark plug wires and spark plugs.
The ignition coils are triggered by the powertrain control module in pairs (cylinders 1 and 4 and cylinders 3 and 2) sending one ignition spark to the firing cylinder and one ignition spark to the corresponding cylinder on the exhaust stroke. This make sures that any unburnt fuel residues remaining in the cylinder on the exhaust stroke are re - ignited to provide cleaner exhaust emissions.
