My nissan xterra brake lights stay on why

My first guess...
The brake light switch may be misaligned, bad ( burned out) or disconnected. Pushing down the brake pedal opens a switch just above the arm of the pedal. If the switch is out of position, the pedal won't hit it and the light stays on. Check to see if the plug is secure. Check to see if the wires are loose or unplugged. If you have a multimeter ( and know how to use it), you can see if the switch opens and closes like it's supposed to. You'll have to get your head under the dash to see it. It's the one on the left.

My second guess.......
A wire shorted to ground in the brake light circuit can cause a new electrical path to the light , bypassing the switch, keeping the light on. It can be hard to find but, any split or cracked wire casings might give it away. It can be anywhere from the brake pedal switch all the way back to the brake lights.
Good Luck
I hope this helps.

Have an Oldsmobile 1997 Achieva security light stays on and won't everyhing but still won't start , would like to know would the Pro VATS Full Bypass work on it.

If the security light is on, then you have a failed antitheft system. This light is only for this. If you bypass the system, your car will work perfectly again.

The reason the car won't stay running is because the antitheft system in your car is broken. It will run for 5 seconds or less, and then die. Also, you should see a light in the dash that says "security". True it may be due to the ignition, but it also may be somewhere else. Read thru this link, compare your symptoms. I think this might be your problem. http://vatspasslockpasskeysecurityhelp.yolasite.com/

Security light stays on in the dash. when the light came on before, the car woulld not start. now it just stays on all the time.

This is a big problem with GM. If the light is staying on there is definitely a problem with the security (Passlock II) and I HATE IT. The only way to fix it is to install a new ignition switch so the resistor reads the computer correctly to start the car, and get GM to reset the light. I had a 97 Cavalier with the EXACT same problem and the dealer had to do it. There are a few ways to bypass it online, but it requires soldering in a resistor and a relay to the ignition switch. I wasn't comfortable with that.

Ignition keeps going into security car starts then stalls and security idiot light flashes

ignition switch problems on these cars are notorious, you can bypass the anti-theft module by placing a resistor inline so that the module 'thinks' the correct key is not an attempt to steal the car. the anti theft is located behind the glovebox and the resistor costs 15 cents at radio shack, not as hard to do as it sounds and it fixes it for good.

My 2003 pontiac grand am 2.2 ecotech keeps cuttin off its been sitting for a week what can it be

It could be your anti-thief system. Try turning your key to the on position but don't try to start the car. Leave it in the on position for 10 min. Your security light on the dash should stay on throught the process but will go out after the 10 mins. When you see it go off turn your key back off then start your car. If it starts, you just reset your anti-thief system. There are ways to bypass this system. I don't remember the web sights. Good luck.

My security light stays on in my car

If it stays on and the car starts you are in bypass mode.
Some times remote starting alarms have a switch under the console to put a car in this bypass mode.

If not pull the battery for 5 min. and relearn your key.

If still no luck you are me and you got a code in a BCM or PCM.

Just from changing a battery.....Love GM....well in the 60s maybe
