It could be a pcv filter or it could be a bad battery or alternator.

What is a detent on a shifter

A detent is a notch or notches in a part used to keep a shifter (in this case) at a certain position. Be that an automatic or stick-shift. You can imply that the shift pattern on a stick-shift has detents for each gear as the shift lever locks and slides in and out of each position for that gear to work when the clutch is released. The detents on an automatic can resemble "steps" which engage a different gear or series of gears(drive) when a certain step is locked into position by a pressure bar or pressure lever.

Sometimes the pressure bar or pressure lever is spring loaded and your hand works against that tension to select a gear or function(drive). There may be an adjustment for the spring tension, or the spring is too weak and the shift assembly must be replaced.

With electronic shift solenoids, some of the shift assembly is different than with the old-style mechanical shifter. The action may be fly by wire with electronic shifts.

I do not know what you have, so there may be differences.

Can I install a 4 speed automatic transmission in my 1991 chevy cavalier to get better fuel economy?

I assume your car has a standard shift right now. Automatic transmissions **** up more gas than a stick shift, so I would advise you to keep yor standard stick shift. Just don't go around burning tires and try to keep your motor RPM's as low as possible.

I have a 98 s10 pick up with a 4 speed auto it drives fine in drive but if i ever stick it in second gear to start out it slips but if i stick it in first fine shift into second fine and so forth what...

On the 4L60E transmission, when you put it in manual 2, It will take off in 2nd and never shift, Not 1st. So it will be slow to accelerate. This is helpful when stuck in snow or mud. It keeps you from spinning the tires and gives you more traction.

No not your U-joints. They usually make noise when you shift in to gear or put on the gas in gear or let off the gas in gear when dirving. They would make a clunking noise.
Have you checked the Transmission fluid level? A low fluid level may cause hesitations. The fluid should be a nice bright redish color. If it is brownish and yucky looking it is time to change the filter and fluid.
Remember that the level marks on the dip stick are measured in pints and not quarts like the oil is. You need to put the emergency brake on and stick it in neutral and start the engine to check auotmotic transmissions. If it is low then fill it to the full mark. If any fluid at all shows on the stick then unless it is burnt and brown it is probably not your problem. If none showed on the stick you might get lucky. Keep me informed and I could use a thumbs up for me time please. The Raz Shack!!!

Auto transmission stuck in drive stick will move

It could be the linkage from the shifting lever to the tranns. This linkage isn't very expensive to have replaced and your shop can tell you if it is indeed the linkage or not.
