Question about 2002 Buick Rendezvous
I dont know to to check if its the battery or some kind of alternator problem. Is there a fuse or plug I should check?
The first thing we need to know is how long dose it take for the battery to have insufficient amperage to turn the engine over after the new battery is installed .Over night a week or longer .
The reason I ask is their 2 different things that could be happening here. The first is the battery is not chargeing this would fall under the week or so time frame .But the charger light would be on all of the the time .
The second is something is shorting out and draining the battery bad ground wire motor shorting inturnialy shorting switch ECT. This useally will drain the battery quicker but you don't see the charger light if its running at first until the battery low .
Heres some simple tests you can do to deturmain what to do next .
You will need a mutility meter nothing HI tech you can get one for under 10 bucks .Set the thing to the 20 volt DC scale .
With the engine running even if you have to jump start it although I would use a battery charger because if their is a ploblem it could damage the electrical system in the vehicle that is jumping you .
Go black to B red to R battery terminals with probes .You should see between 13.5 and 16 V. DC. 12 V or lower the alternator is not working correctly.
Next test meter on same scale disconnect the negitive cable from BAT .R probe on R BAT. B probe to engine block or knowen good ground no painted surfaces metal to metal do you read voltage .If so something is shorting someware and this is draining the battery and the ALT . can't keep up with the drain.
The average time for the alternator to fully charge a car battery is 13 hours however a battery dosn't need to be fully charged to start the engine olny when it gets really low do you have problems .
Hope this makes sence to you and good luck

The Battery Light coming on usually indicates the charging system is not working. If you can limp it down to your local Auto Parts Store they will usually check your battery and charging system for free.
Yes a fuse can cause charging system to malfunction - also there will be a Major Fuse/Fusable Link. If you have your owners manual there will be a section showing fuse locations and description.
Let me know if and how this helps you
