Don't use that mechanic anymore. What he said is wrong just replace switch. The gear shifter and brake switch separate from each other

I have a 2009 Pontiac G6 with 32,700 miles. Lately, sometimes it is difficult to put it in reverse. It kinda jams, but finally will change from "Park" to "Reverse". Was told it probably needs a new gear...

Without check out the vehicle we'd only be guessing , but sounds like a problem with the shift interlock safety system . There is a lock solenoid inside the shifter assembly that won't allow the shifter to be moved from park unless the drivers foot is pushing on the brake pedal. Don't know if this is console shifter or on the steering coulmn ,but both have similar set up . Has brake pedal switch , solenoid , wiring and the BCM - body control module . The BCM control's the shiftlock solenoid . Don't force the shifter out of park , you will brake it . Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop .

Ford crown vic stuck in park

ok you can have a few things wrong. First have some one step on brake pedal see if brake lights come on. If not these vehicles were bad about the wires braking to the brake light switch. After check ing lights and you have found the are operating correctly, try turning igintion key cylinder to first notch just before dash lights come on, now see if you can shift out of park if so the shift interlock solienod on back of column is bad. Lastly if the sifter is really loose they are two 30 torx screws on the back of the column hold the bracket to the shift cable, if that comes off or loose you can not shift as well. Hope this helps if so please vote thank you

in order for your car to come out of park, the brake lights have to come on. it's a safety feature. are your brake lights coming on?if not then check for a blown brake light fuse in the fuse panel. if not that the brake light switch above the brake pedal may have gone bad.or another solution is, are you parked in a bind? with alot of pressure on the transmission? it will take 2 people to get it unstuck. 1st person in car with key on,2nd person rock car back and forth to free it from a bind. sometimes cars[automatics] do this.while the cars rocking try shifting out of park.hope this helps and thank you for choosing

I have a Hyundai Accent 2000, My shift is locked in Park unless I use shift lock over ride?

i would check the wires on the brake switch, make sure you don't have a broken wire. if the wires look good tap on the brake switch and then try putting it in to drive if it works then yomight need the replace the brake switch. but also that all of your fuses are good. somtimes that will do it also. try that good luck

My 2002 ford excort will not shift out of park unless you use the shift override button. The fuse for this circuit is good.

Are your brake lights working? A common cause of this problem is the brake lamp switch being disconnected or having a bad switch. One problem that I have seen a LOT is broken wires near the brake lamp switch due to the installation of aftermarket accessories that tie into the brake lamp circuits.

My gear shift will not budge from park. It has done this before, but only for a couple of tries. what can i do?

It is most likely due to your gearshift interlock. This is there to make sure that you have your foot on the brake before shifting out of park. ( It is a nice safety feature that keeps little kids from shifting the vehicle because they can't reach the brake and shift the car at the same time.) If you are stepping on the brake when you are trying to get it out of park and it still won't go, the most likely cause is a bad brake lamp switch or brake lamp fuse. Check your brake lights to see if they are working. If not, fix the brake lights and your shift problem will likely be solved. If the brake lamps are working, then the Shift Lock Solenoid could be defective.

2005 hyundai Accent, can't shift out of park and no brake lights

may want to check the brake pedal switch located on top of the brake pedal arm. If all fuses looks good, replace the brake pedal switch, which can also cause to not shift out of park.

My 2005 hyundai accent wont shift out of park unless i use the shift lock override. any advice?

on most cars when u step on the brake pedal youll hear a "click" near the center console which is the shift solenoid releasing the "lock" on the floor shifter allowing the shifter to come out of park.check to make sure all the fuses are good and check the brake lite switch(es) and wiringfrom brake lite switch to shifter solenoid.a wiring diagram always helps.

Car will not shift from park

Start the engine, push the brake pedal. Have someone look to see if the brake lamps light up. If they do not light up, the fuse to the brake lamps is blown, or the brake lamp switch is bad. The brake pedal switch sends power to the shifter lock. The lock retracts only when the brake pedal is pressed.
