Try gently turning the wheel left or right as you try to shift. Truck starts ok I assume. Also apply brake. Maybe the switch thT tells it the brake is pushed is bad

Wont shift from park

Check to see if brake lights work. The safety system uses a switch on the top of the brake pedal lever to prevent shifting out of Park without putting your foot on the brake.

If you lose the signal from this switch, it will not come out of Drive. Often the drivers' foot hits and moves or breaks this switch. Look under your dash to inspect this part.

Once you get the brake lights working, it should shift out of Park.

My '97 grand prix wont shift from park. What is

Hi, you have a malfunctioning brake/park interlock. When you go to shift out of park, as you know, you have to hit the brake or the shifter won't jump out of Park into Reverse. The interlock device that in this system is probably failing.

I have to hit the reset button on the shifter nearly every time i want to take it out of park any ideas

First, the basics. The vehicle is equipped with a "shift lock safety switch"; this part is responsible for preventing the shifter from being taken out of "Park" unless you have your foot on the brake pedal. A good idea since the car could lunge backward/forward if the brakes were not applied while shifting from "Park".

Hitting the reset button is probably allowing you to "bypass" this switch and shift out of "Park".
Check if the fuse is blown on either the brake/stop lights or the shift interlock circuit. If the fuse is bad, replace as needed. If the fuses are good, then it is possible that the shift lock solenoid could have gone bad. Disassembly of the center console surrounding the shifter may be necessary to access this part.

Hope this helps.

Have a Nice Day!!!

Ignition key doesn't turn, gear shift stuck in park

Check under your dash at the levers for the Brake pedal. There are some Interlock switches that get hit by feet fairly regularly. The switch that makes the gearshift unlock is on the Brake pedal. You have to have your foot on the brake to shift out of Park.

When the shifter is stuck you will not be able to remove your Key from the Ignition. You need to press on the Brake and then try to get the trigger on the shifter to move into Park. Once in Park everything will be okay.

96 ford taurus gear shift stuck in park

CHECK IF THE BRAKE LIGHT COME ON WHEN YOU HIT THE BRAKE PEDAL. IF DON'T. CHECK BRAKE LIGHT FUSE. COULD BE A BRAKE SWITCH. THERE IS A shift lock solenoid that receives a signal when the key is on and the brake pedal is depressed that allows you to move the shift lever to be taken out of park.

No break light, can not shift gear.

your brake light switch has failed. this will also allow you to shift out of park when you hit the brake pedal. when you hit the brake pedal the brake light should come on and the shift interlock solenoid will activate(you might hear a clicking sound under the dash or near the shift handle) allowing you to shift out of park.

2003 Accord LX Not Shifting Out of Park on Random Occurances

Can you hear or feel a "click" in your gear selector when you hit the brakes? If you don't, the solenoid that disengages the lock could be sticking.
