This is an electrical control problem. The gear selector switch is bad.

I have the same code error after replacing automatic transmission and clutch. Are You sure this is only electrical problem? My mechanic suggested preassure problem and I don't know wich part replacement is necessary

  • Brad Brown Nov 19, 2017

That error is the TCM not getting the proper signal and that could be a bad connection, ire harness or a bad TCM

thanks for response. Mechanic just realised that he mounted mitsu eclipse 3g gearbox F4A42 instead of 4g version F4A4B. Gearbox works ok for some time and thenm it enters in safe mode. Should I buy 3G ECU? do You have any idea? I am from Europe and it is not popular car here so I am looking for any help

  • Brad Brown Nov 23, 2017

Don't switch ECU that would be more problems.

  • Brad Brown Nov 24, 2017

That is the way to go. Replace the TCM with the recommended one.

This is an indication that the TCM is not function properly As it is an automatic the gears in constant mesh with gear changes being effected by clutch packs and bands so the ratios are always correct just the selection is not working properly./ Hence the TCM fault.

Whats a reverse ratio and a P1784 & P1782

Technically speaking a gear ratio is the rapport between the angular velocity (rotating speed) of the engine shaft and the angular velocity of the transmission output shaft.
The reverse ration is the ratio of the reverse gear. Your codes are pointing at a problem with the electronic transmission, probably a defective pressure switch inside transmission resulting in wrong reverse gear ratio. Please see my troubleshooting in this similar case where a defective pressure switch led to incorrect first gear ratio (I know your code is with reverse).

P1780 Is the indication that the neutral safety switch has failed. It is mounted on the side of the transmission where the linkage is attached. replacement is the normal fix. This part is a bit pricey and you might get lucky looking in a salvage yard for a used one.

What does these codes mean P1781, P0731, P1784 AND P0700 AND HOW DO I FIX THEM.

p1781 is manufacturer control transmission, p0731 is gear 1 ratio incorrect, p1784 is manufacturer control transmission, p0700 is trans, control system malfunction. all of these codes refer to tranny. This code normally points to a faulty transmission control module, but this is an expensive part and you should have an experienced Dodge technician diagnose the problem first. or a transmission specialist. the other codes are probably associated with the p0700 code. have a good day !

I have a 1997 Oldsmobile 88 LS and I am wondering what code P 1780 is?

P1780 is a bad neutral/park (mode) switch. This is not a common problem but I have seen them bad.The switch is located on top of the transmission where the linkage that the shift cable connects. If you ment code P1870 the let me know because this is much more common and I will go through that explanation.

Here is the deal, u have some serious transmission related faults, in order to sort this out u will need to take this to the dealer, allot of testing is required to get to the bottom of this, if I had to guess I would say the trans is going to have to be overhauled.
