It all depends on make usually you have an odd and even side fords just run down the line 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 however all cars are the same in V motors number 1 cylinder is the that has the head that sits more forward than the other head if your talking 4 cylinder number 1 cylinder is the first cylinder by the accessories alt. power steering act so number 4 would be last one in valve cover by trans gm v-8 as 6's are 1-3-5-7 and 2-4-6-8 minus the 7 and 8 for 6 bangers

My car has gas and a good battery when I tried to start it the engine backfired

Has anyone given it a tuneup lately? I ask because it sounds like the distributor may be 180 degrees out of align. Another possibility is that someone has adjusted the timing by loosening the distributor. This could be a simple as the wrong spark plug wires connected to the wrong terminals on the distributor cap. Check the firing order and make sure that the wires are leading to the correct sparkplug. I believe you have a V6 so here it what I have found.
Your firing order should be 1-4-2-5-3-6 . As you can see, they start at the back left, then front left and proceed back to front in order. Standing in front of the vehicle the back left plug is # 1 moving from left to right the next backside (closest to the windshield) plug is #2 then #3. The front most plugs are from left to right #4 , 5 and 6. The distributor cap should have a "1" on it indicating #1 cylinder/sparkplug. Check the wires and make sure it is wired right. If after all this it looks right, or you have a 4 cylinder let us know. You may have a sensor problem and that is harder to diagnose.
Checking the timing is a little hard and requires a timing light. If you dont have these tools you should probably let a shop do the work for you. Good luck.

Need firing order for sparkplugs where wires go to the block

The engine is even-firing, with a firing order of 1-2-3-4-5-6. Cylinder #1 is at the right front, with #1, #3 and #5 on the right bank and #2, #4 and #6 on the left bank.

Need to replace sparkplug wires.I had my plug wires ripped out of my car now I need to replace them in the right firing order.

The 3800 after 1984 is 'distributorless' so you have six "firing coils" located on the front of the engine and numbered for your convenience. looking at the 'front' of the engine which is where all the pulleys and the serpentine belt is viewing from the passenger side fender, the cylinders are numbered #1 on your right then #2 on your left and alternate right left from front to rear of the motor to connect your wires.
