Does tensioner belt need to be put on( car ) just to remove old worn shredded serpentine belt?

There are belt tensioners and there are serpentine belts not sure what a tensioner belt is. You do not have to have a belt tensioner on a motor to remove a serpentine belt.

Serpentine belt was shredding and smoke was coming from under the hood. changed the serpintine belt and it si still smioking

Serpentine belts have an idler pulley and an automatic belt tensioner - either one of these could have gone bad and could cause the smoke. The idler pulley has a bearing inside that can seize, stopping the pulley from turning which would cause the belt to fray. The tensioner keeps the belt tight and when they go, the belt hangs loose, causing the belt to burn on the other components. The Alternator also runs on that belt, as well as the a/c compressor and other components, depending on the particulars of your car ( make, model, engine, accessories, etc.) and the main bearings can be bad there too. There are actually several key components running off the belt and, without being there, I cannot accurately diagnose the issue. I recommend you go to a reputable shop. The type of smell in the burning would guide me to what to check - there are many things that can cause these symptoms. If that mechanic only changed the belt but did not investigate the cause I personally would not go back there.
I'm sorry i couldn't offer anything more concrete to help - hopefully I've given you some directions to look!
Hope this helps!!

SERPENTINE BELT

I had a similar problem that turned out to be some bad rubber bushings on the alternator mounting bolt. The alternator would shift from side to side causing misalignment with the serpentine belt. To check this, you will need to remove the serpentine belt and take a close look at those bushings. If they are original equipment, I would change them out. In my case, everything lined up fine, but with the engine running, the alternator would shift position and shred the serpentine belt. Good luck.

you need to wire brush your pulleys so all grooves are clean and see if one of your engine components that run off the belt are loose or have a bad bearing good luck

My jeep keeps shreding serpentine belt

Either the tensioner is defective and needs replacing, or the pulleys are out of alignment. I would suspect the tensioner pulley is bad. I am assuming you are installing the correct belt.

I have a 1999 Mercury Sable. The only problem I have had with the car is the serpentine belt. It started 3 months ago . . . the engine was overheating and the belt was shredding. I bought a belt tensioner...

take the belt off and carefully check to see if any of the pulleys are out of line and check to make sure they spin smooth and true check for bearing wear and noise in any of the pulleys cause it sounds like simply there is a pulley out of line

is the a/c working ok??? shredding the belt may be cause by the a/c compressor problems. the "chunk" maybe not, but shredding tells me something does not spin when it should. I dont know why the mehanic put a new pump on that had a problem with the pulley, it should be smooth. anyhting that the belt runs should be smooth and east to turn, make sure that all of the grooves are clean, no remnants of the old belt.
