You should check the Idle air controller. You can test it with an meter and determine if it is working. It is on the side of the TBI.

adjust your idle up. had the same problem with my 84 when I had the 305 in it. Turned up the idle just a hair and car ran great! there is a screw on the throttle linkage going to the carb located on the driver side of the carb.

I have a 1989 ford bronco with a 302 that ideals up and down and dies out when park in red light

A number of things could be the problem here:
  1. Bad plugs - fouled plugs would cause erratic idling
  2. Bad wires - also would cause erratic idling
  3. Bad or worn distributor cap
  4. Bad MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor
  5. Bad TPS (Throttle Position Sensor - this controls the idling speed under all conditions. A bad TPS would idle fine under certain conditions ie engine cold, engine warm with AC on etc but could be bad when truck is warm and at a stop.

1989 cherokee dies at light

You named the three items I'd look at first. get a manual (chilton or haynes are fine for this) and a digital multimeter. Run the tests on those and likely you will find the problem. You can also remove and clean the IAC valve and passages but do not turn the valve while cleaning or it may not seat correctly.

What is the distributor timing mark for 89 chevy

Is the vacuum hose removed from the dist when the timing is being checked?
Are you connected to the first plug wire (closest to the rad) on the drivers side?
If this is being done.....remove the cap and rotor and check the springs on the mechanical advance, the advance should be tight to the shaft and springs tight.
I would set the base timing on this set up idle speed...... at between 5 and 10 before TDC.

Remember......timing marks on modified engines are not always accurate. Parts from this year and that year put together.

try tightening the bolts that hold the carb to the engine; very common vacuum leak location.
