Question about 2003 Saab 9-3

Car diagnostic code P2257?

The check engine light came on. I had it coded, the code is p2257. My fuel cap was very loose, so I replaced it, I don't know if that is the problem. What should I do? Is this an easy fix? I just got the car.

P2257 - Secondary Air Injection System Control 'A' Circuit Low

This could be a number of things on this side like a control valve. A hose or the motor on the air pump but I wouldn't say a big or expensive job

When Engine light came on 2009 Mercury Sable and got P0442 diagnostic code so how bad is diagnostic and how costly to fix?


code p0442 refers to evaporative emission system(EVAP)--small leak detected==causes-- hose connections,--intake leak--EVAP canister--EVAP canister purge valve
it also refers to large leak detected ( loose fuel cap/missing cap) causes--mechanical fault--hose connections---EVAP pressure sensor
If it has just started then check that the fuel cap is on tight or replace the pressure sensor or lastly ( it will probably the most expensive) the purge valve.

I believe it could be a faulty oxygen sensor or blocked air tubes. Check to make sure air pump is operating.Check green and black wires between pcm and pump relay. Check for 12v power between these two wires with key on check the wires for damage as this has been a problem area on these vehicles. Hope this helps.

Sorry, but there is no "sensor at the fuel cap". Therefore, there is no code that says "sensor at the fuel cap". There is, however, a Diagnostic Test Code (DTC) That indicates a possible problem with the fuel cap.
(HINT: When you want information on codes, it is usually wise to include the code number that you are getting - that way, it can be looked up, instead of GUESSING at what the problem is from a code description that some generic code reader is telling you..)
DTC P0457 is defined by SAE J2012 as "Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (fuel cap loose/off)"

At this point, I am ASSUMING this is the code you got.

This DTC is set when the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects that there is an in-tank pressure drop that is more than 7in. H2O within 30 seconds directly after refueling, or there is excessive purge (fuel Vapor) flow more than .06 lbs. per minute. Possible causes are:
> Fuel filler cap not installed after refueling
> Fuel filler cap loose or cross-threaded

There are other malfunctions that can also cause this code to set, but it will be accompanied by other codes indicating other possible failures.
If there are no other Evaporative Emissions System codes present, then there is most likely a problem with the way your fuel cap was put on the last time you got fuel.

Check your fuel cap and make sure it is on correctly and is tight.

Check engine light is on sensors has been changed


The first thing to do when the check engine light is on is to retrieve the codes. It's near impossible to determine the cause of a check engine light without seeing the car or knowing the codes. Also what sensors have been replaced? Sensors are not the only cause of check engine lights. Causes could include sensors bad or disconnected, broken evap system lines, fuel fill cap not on tight, and a lot more. Autozone could retrieve the code(s) for you if you don't have a code reader or scan tool and then you could go from there.

Trouble Code: P2257 - Secondary Air Injection (AIR) System Control A Circuit Low

Possible Causes:
* Open B+ circuit * Open VPWR circuit * Open voltage circuit between the AIR relay and the secondary AIR pump * Damaged AIR relay
It is most likely either a hose or line that fell off, broke or is kinked, or a bad A.I.R. pump. What you can do is unplug the A.I.R. pump connector. Ground the black wire and, with a 30 amp fused jumper wire, apply battery voltage to the white wire.

If the pump runs, then chances are the pump is good and the problem is with a hose. If not, then the A.I.R. pump will need to be replaced.

First off I'm glad to see you've done your homework. You are correct, the PCM is not seeing the pump turn on, and thats whats causing your code. The only thing you got wrong is that the CCRM does not control the Air Pump. There is a seperate solid state relay located near the air filter that controls the pump.

You will first need to check this relay for Power and check its grounds. First check the black and yellow wire. If this has twelve volts then check the ground. If its good then the relay is most likely bad if your only getting 7v at the pump.
You can see in the diagram that the PCM just monitors the power going to the pump. If the white wire to the pump has 12v then the pcm is happy.

Here are the schematics to help you. This is not a common problem with this vehicle, so I am sorry I cannot give you a precise answer. You will need to do more testing.

P2257 Secondary Air Injection System Control "A" Circuit Low
Check your vacuum system, any hoses that turn your hands black, like you have been playing with charcole, replace them. Do this first before changing those expensive sensores.

2008 Toyota Sienna check engine light is on, diagnostic check reports code PO451. Checked the fuel cap, it is ok, anything else I can do? How can I reset so lights go off?

Fault code P0451 is a code for the fuel tank evaporative emission control pressure sensor, this sensor is located on the top of the fuel tank, the gas cap is not the problem here, as far as the check engine light goes it will reset by itself if the problem is fixed in 3 drive cycles (about 60 miles of mixed driving), to clear it you either use a scanner or disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, I do not recommend the battery method as it can cause you to loose vital settings in the control modules in the car.

code P1456 set when there's small leak in the fuel tank system.
Most known reason for P1456:
-Didn't tight fuel cap on until it click for more that 3 time after fueling up and drove the car too long with cap loose.
-or a bad gas cap.
I'll try tighting the gas cap.
clear check engine.
if code come back, replace gas cap and clear check engine light again.
