If your lucky its just vapor lock. but as above check oil is it white milky then blew head gasket.
Very hot engine and cold water don't mix, causes steam and vapor locks.
Next time let it cool then add water.
When cold crank it over a few times with thermostat out.put back thermo then add coolant and test.
fix the problem that was causing it to overheat in the first place

Hope this helps let me know Mike

Blown headgasket is most likely. Possibly cracked head/block (water may be in the oil) If you are lucky, the spark plug wires are just wet and killing spark. Hard to tell with no vehicle information.

Changed thermostat and added coolant but 1997

could be waterpump?
i was going to say rad fan,but if so heater would be hot.
lack of coolant will make heater core to blow cold,if engine heats up with full coolant, usually means poor or no circulation.
water pump?
run engine with full coolant,at operating temp.with rad cap off and look in rad cap hole and see if there is movement of water inside rad.
[rad fan will not come on if water is not circulating through rad water pump?]

Overheating and wont keep running after key is released

Sounds like you have a blown head gasket. In this case though, I feel that you are blowing hot exhast gases from the combustion chamber into the water jacket causeing it to heat up. In these cases, the engine will generaly get hot in shorter time than what one would normally suspect. Typically just a head gasket is needed. Have your mechanic check the radiator for combustion gases. This is checked with a fluid in a bolltle that will change colors if found. GL

94 honda accord ran hot and now it wont start

no - an alternator will NOT cause the engine to overheat like you have stated.

My 94 honda accord ran hot and now wont start

Sorry. Could also be a cracked head or block. Take the spark plugs out and see if they are wet.  Charge battery and turn engine over with the coil grounded and the sparkplugs out. If water flyes out of any cylinder, you may have to disassemble the engine.
