SOURCE: CHANGING THE HEATER CORE OF AN 04 IMPALA

Drain the coolant. Remove the dashboard first, then a bunch of air ducts, then the heater core cover. Remove the heater hoses in the rear of the motor, and finally the heater core.

Before you go thru that expense. If it is water leaking, check the evaporator. Sometimes it gets plugged with debris. So first, decide if it is water or anti-freeze. Also, I have taken the heater hoses off of the inside of the motor area and flushed the core out. It works on some.

SOURCE: 2004 Chevy Impala no heat from defrost or heater

No heat is often a symptom of low coolant, usually followed by overheat. There are other controls that regulate heater, but right now, re-fill the cooling system with engine running and heater on high, then check for leaks (coolant you lost went somewhere...you need to determine where) Low coolant will damage your engine. Take care of that first, then if heater still does not work, then do diagnosis on that. (if you loose the engine heat won't matter, will it!)

Your heater core is clogged. You can fix it. Disconnect the two heater hoses and put one into a bucket. Use an air compressor to blow into the other - it'll flush the contents into the bucket. Then reverse it - put the hose you blew into, in the bucket, and blow into the one that was in the bucket. This way, whichever side of the core had the clog, you can blow it out. Reconnect the heater hoses, and then burp the system or you can end up with air bubbles in the cooling system that can cause you to overheat. Click my screenname, go to Tips and Tricks, and follow the procedure there - it'll walk you through the whole procedure step by step.

How do i change a heater core on a 2004 impala?

If it is not leaking, you probably don't need to change it. There are flapper doors which direct where air goes in the system. The flapper used to direct air through the heater core is not working. This can be caused by a vacuum leak anywhere in the engine or heater/A/C unit, a bad leaking control head, or most likely a bad flapper door actuator, hidden deep under the dash. See shop manual.

Why doi hear water in the dash on a 2004 chevy impala

That's the antifreeze entering and exiting the heater core, which is located behind the glove box of the dashboard. If there is sweet smell or antifreeze on the inside floor on the passenger side, you have a leak in the heater core.

How can I tell how long my heater core has been bad in my 2004 impala?

You can tell by the build up of the white powdery dried engine coolant around the area of the leak on the core. That is the only way.

I just got this 2004 impala police car. I found coolant inside on floor. I can tell it flow from the center of underneath control console. Can any one give me idea how to fix it? Thanks Hanping

unfortunately it is not an easy fix. Your heater core is bad. The heater core is behind the glove box. you may be able to go in under the dash on passenger side, which is where it should be leaking at, and pull it out there. However, it may be easier to remove the glove box and re-install it after you change the core. YOu could have a loose hose on it, however I bet it is a bad core.

Not getting heat in cab put new heater core in an thermostat still nothing back flush the core still nothing

Is the blower running at all? Also, make sure the main air intake vent is free of obstructions.

Also, a vacuum leak could cause the actuator to not function correctly. I'd check into the vacuum lines if all else fails. I've had too many cars here with heat/air problems due to vacuum loss and the actuators not switching correctly.
