Hi the best way to go about this if you havent got a diagram, first if you take all the sparkplugs out and get a rubber glove and cut the finger off and put a bit of tissue in the end then push it tight into the number 1 sparkplug hole then turn crank by hand when the tissue jumps out of the hole it means that that is the top dead centre,
so when it jumps out just turn the crank back just past the top dead centre mark and slowly move forwould untill the 0 mark lines up with the pointer on the engine block,if you take the cape off the distibuter it should be pointing at the number 1 position,
right now what you want to do is get some tipex or a good felt tip and mark the cams or cam and put a mark on the head the same place on the block, undo tensioner and replace the belt, be carefull to make shore the sprockets match up when the belt is put back on,
last thing to do is to turn the engine over by hand untill the marks line up again(the crank will have to goround twice for the marks to inline again)if it lines up all right then you are ready to start the engine,if not just tuncrank again untill the crank lines up again and make adjustments.
hope this was some help.

i can see you never did a G16B engine ever, and is dead wrong, the cam is timed with the E mark up and is #4 firing, a hard cold fact, why give guessed at answers.? and send the poor oP on and endless failing saga..... why? the below shows the false marks too, which is not covered in any book in print.!!!

the best way to time any engine, with no books, no alldata.com account, nor reading the steps in the GATES belt box, is to GUESS? really? do that on J18 or any twin cam and the engine is wrecked.

there are 4 marks, there is never a reason ever to mark the G16 engines. (sure do make spark wires before yanking them, but not the cam cogs. not ever or the crank pulley nor the oil pump mark..

OP, the cam cog has 2 false marks, and is not covered in any book (cog is used on a G13 DOHC engine too, (yes, shocking) the timing marks and key marks must be on the "E" mark. only. shown above. with photos if key steps. and pitfalls.

    _-__-___-_ May 07, 2015

SF-413 DOHC motor. (the cog fits this too off a suzuki SWIFT. G13B or G13K, the E marks on twin cam are for Exhaust side and I marks for intake side, this is above is G16B and has only one cam.

none of this is mentioned in the FSM book or any others.(oddly) the G16A 8v has false marks too, and for for simular reasons. 1991-1995 USA.

Check throtle position sensor... one section closes a set of contacts when you take your foot off the accelerator... this is sent back to the engine control computer which adjust the timing to insure the engine stays @ ~ 800 rpm. It's easy to set with just a simple multimeter...

NO, the engine is an overhead camshaft the rocker arms ride directly on the camshaft so their is no need for a lifter, by the way the valve lash should be .003-.005 of an inch.

If the timing belt keeps breaking and bending valves, the timing belt and cylinder head repair is not being done correctly. It's as simple as that. Are you changing the tensioner and idler pullies when replacing the belt? Is it timed correctly? Was the timing belt tension adjusted properly? Were the cam journals checked for damage? If not, you are asking for another belt failure.

If you want to know why the check engine light is coming on, you will have to ask your engine computer. Every time the light comes on it is storing a fault code to tell you why. You must scan your engine control module to retrieve the fault code(s) so you can get it properly diagnosed and repaired.

id not guess, there are 50+ reasons for misfire, yours is that.
the only way to diagnose a EFI problem is to use, tools .
got tools?
first tune it up, spark plugs, wire-set, cap, rotor and fuel filter & air filter. do the 60k tune up with a new timing belt if the belt slips all engine power drops, and misfires, and compression drops real low.
use a tool called a compression gauge.
1: the wrong gas cap will cause the fuel pump to stall. get a cap that is factory rated, with a real vacuum breaker.
2: low fuel pressure, use a , gauge .
3: injectors leaking or clogged, same gauge finds same failures.
there is no need to guess. and throw expensive parts, ever.

We have a 1994 Suzuki Side kick in for work and the timing belt broke on it. We would like to know if the valves bend when this happens.

nearly or perhaps all of the suzuki side kick engines are "Interference Engines" .. that means when the timing belt breaks, if the engine keeps spinning then pistons will collide with some valves that are left open .. that can damage those valves and or pistons .. that usually increases the cost of repairs .. on "clearence" type engines.. when the belt breaks you just coast to a stop with no damage done .. but high performance engines are often "interference" type .. with them its extra important to change the belt on schedule since the potential for expensive damage is great .. ..
