Question about 2002 Lincoln LS
The first thing that I would be suspicious of would be the starter. What happens when you try to start the car? Does the starter turn over? Is there a clicking noise? Did the car run fine after starting with the grinding noise? If it did, then the grinding was probably associated with the starter. If you pull the starter and the little gear on the pointy end is all chewed up you'll be on your way to solving the problem. If you're lucky, a rebuilt starter will probably be most cost effective and hopefully (usually) the ring gear will be OK.

I had experienced the same problem with my 93 TC. I'll try to make it short. Replace the Idle Control Valve. Cost me $50 at AutoZone. It has a electronic plunger that has a rubber o ring on the end of it. It separates two air chambers inside the valve. When the rubber gets old and the plunger is suppose to cut off the air coming in from one chamber to the other, the air gets sucked between the chambers across the old rubber causing the humming noise. That is also why the engines revs up and down and wont idle right. It is located between the firewall and the back of the motor just to the left (drivers side) of the throttle control assembly. When you look up on the internet on how to replace it, it will tell you to remove all the housing surrounding the wiper blade control arms and assembly so that you can access it. If you take your time, just remove some of the hoses and wires connected around it and you can access it without removing all that ****. Only has two screws to it that point up and can be reached with a ratchet and extension. Car runs great now and finally got rid of that noise.

it is down under the intake manifold. the intake manifold must be removed to get to it. this vehicle is known for developing a vacum leak in the elbow hose that connects to pcv valve, so ive done a few.

These cars are famous for leaky seals where the valve cover interfaces with the cylinder head, at the spark plug journals. They fill with oil, short the coils and cause a misfire. Driving it any significant distance can destroy your catalytic converters ad unburnt fuel ignites therein, creating inferno-like conditions and a fire hazard too. You'll get a "300 code", such as 301 if cylinder 1 is misfiring, 302 for # 2, etc. Pull the coil off the spark plug for that cylinder and if it is moist at all, that's your issue. Have new seals put in, or you'll just keep blowing coils at $50 a whack.

you have to remove the left front wheel well rear splash shield.to get to fuel filter.
