The coil is shorting out the HT spark
clean area , or there may be a crack in the coil at the ht lead cover
if so replace the coil

Change your fuel filter. Replace the distributor cap and rotor. If you have the HEI ignition, they are really bad about burning through the igniton rotor.

I would change the spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, fuel filter, check and change air filter if dirty, check timing, check and top off all fluids, check or change transmission fluid, check brake pads/.shoes and drums/rotors for wear and check tire pressure, check the condition of all belts and hoses and replace as needed, check condition of radiator antifreeze and top off or replace as needed.

Downshift hesitation?

Sounds like a plugged catalytic converter or in rare cases muffler. This will set codes but try this; remove O2 sensor closest to front of catalytic converter, it will be noisy but drive again, if performance is better, suspect plugged catalytic converter, replace cat and reinstall O2. Also check air filter and mas air flow sensor. Have had some luck carefully cleaning sensor with throttle body/air intake cleaner after removing from vehicle with key off. Hope this helps ! Starting ruff

I'm leaning toward a bad sensor, as in throttle body temperature, or coolant temperature sensor. The smell of too much fuel is probably from pushing pedal to start, which shouldn't be necessary on a fuel injected vehicle. What does it do if you leave your foot off the gas pedal during start? As far as fuel filter goes, if it hasn't been done in a while, I'd do it anyway just as preventative maintemance if nothing else.
