Actually yes. I had the light come on in my vehicle so I went to the local car parts place and they did a free code check.
I was told to take off the gas cap and put it back on.
We restarted the vehicle and the light did not come back on.
The older the gas cap gets the gasket wears out. I however had just not seated mine on right after I had gassed up. lol
Does not always have to cost $100's for a fix.

Take it to a better mechanic. There is no code that says "The gas cap is bad". It could be a possible fix for a code or two but obviously not yours. Autozone parts people are not mechanics, the code never tells you what is wrong it only tells you where to start looking. Autozone"s code reader also only tells you what parts are needed based on probability. What is the code number? Just because that guy has a smoke machine it does not mean he knows how to use it. He must close the vent valve with a scanner or a 12v power source, did he? I have seen Evap codes set for something as simple as spider webs in the vent line. Someone must take the code number then print out the trouble tree and run it down. Just because a guy has a tool box and tools does not mean he can diagnose problems. There are less guys that truly know how the systems in a car work (truly work) then you can imagine.

SOURCE: 2005 Chevy Cobalt, how do you reset a fault code?

Your car has a OBD2 hook up under the dash somewhere on the drivers side, You have to have a computer to hook up to that ODB plug and reset it, If you live near a Autozone they will clear the code for you for free, One other thing you try is disconnecting your battery for about 30 mins, that works on alot cars to reset the check light.

SOURCE: 2005 trailblazer check engine light on

Verify any "check engine" by first resetting the computer then waiting to see if it returns. To reset the computer, disconnect the battery cable (some say either cable, I say positive{red} cable). Leave the cable disconnected for about 30 minutes then reconnect it and start the engine. Because the cable was disconnected from power for a while, the computer will have to reboot upon startup. Just like any computer, sometimes a reboot will solve the hangup. If the error returns, it is likely a sensor is bad or the sensor is indicating a true problem.

I doubt the problems are connected.
The check engine light could be anything including the loose gas cap.
But if that was the only problem it would not keep the truck from moving.
If it starts and runs, but won't go into gear, something has happened to the transmission or axle.
You may have to get it towed to a shop to find out what the trouble codes are in the computer.

The last 5-6 I have gotten gas, 2005 Sportage hard to start at gas pump, but then fine after a few miles - mechanic is clueless!

Your code, assuming it was evap related, also means other issues aside from a loose gas cap. Your fuel system "closes" down to purge unburned fuel back through the engine. A loose gas cap will stop this process, as in why the check engine light will go on. Also, there is a vent solenoid, purge solenoid, fuel tank pressure sensor, and a charcoal canister that are involved. My guess, but if you have a bad vent solenoid, you may have symptoms like yours. Any "good" technician can test this for you.

My check gas cap light is on but no check engine light came on

The check gas cap light was in response to complaints of the check engine light being on for loose/missing gas caps. So now when the PCM sees a large EVAP leak the first thing it does is illuminate the check gas cap light (on models equipped with the light). Since it doesn't know if the gas cap is on or not it can have other issues like a vent solenoid stuck open which the PCM would be unable to distinguish between that and the gas cap left off.

There will still be a trouble code in the PCM for the EVAP system.

Lincoln 2005 Navigator. What should I do for my Engine light being on?

go to autozone and get the code for free, then come back and tell us. Or go get the car diagnosed.
Or make sure your gas cap is on tight. A loose cap sinks wallets. If its a gas cap issue it may take a day for the light to go off on its own.

did you put gas in with engine running if so this caused the problem if not you might try new gas cap when you start this truck pcm commands a vacuum pulled on fuel tank system if this vacuum cannot be acheived or maintained it determines that there is a leak

I think someone loosened my gas cap on my 07 silverado, would like to know if there is a way to reset engine light.

Once you tighten the gas cap the engine light will reset itself after it has gone threw the necessary drive cycles, but only if the problem has been fixed. So yes if the check engine light came on for the reason of a loose gas cap, once you tighten it it will go off on its own.

What cause my check engine light to come on?

there are hundreds of reasons a check engine light can come on. Many are emission system related, including something so simple as your gas cap being loose. A local autoparts store, such as autozone , will usually check your light for free and tell you an idea as to what caused the light

Gas Cap Error with Check Engine light

By "Replace the gas cap", do you mean put it back on, or buy another one? If you fuel these trucks with the engine running, or don't tighten the gas cap, the light will come on. It will also come on when the seal in your gas cap goes bad. I have had to replace the gas cap on my jeep and dodge already. It fixed the problem both times.
