What would cause a stumble in the engine firing ?

Fresh tune up new external coil plugs rotor cap and plug wires , also I have tried to idle up the engine to help but the idle drops back automatically ,I take it to a 1000 RPM and it drops back to around 800 RPM

Fresh? take it back DIY? triplecheck your work. There are some bad connections or salt corroded connections. Bright metal surfaces are critical for proper information flow from sensors to the ECU (brain).

Engine dies in idle mode


Hi there:
When was the last time the engine was full tuned up? This sounds like a classic ignition misfire! They usually go bad under a load like under acceleration, but can be noticeable at any time.


It is very important to have your engine equipped with good tune up parts or you may be causing damage to other components of you car like the catalytic converter which can be expensive.


Possible causes:
Ignition misfire causes by any bad tune up part and or ignition coil or coils.
Bad spark plugs, spark plug wires and cap and rotor (if equipped)
Wrong tune up parts spark plug, wires etc...


The quickest way to check the ignition components, is by looking closely for leaking secondary voltage. Visual look at all the tune up parts to see if you can see any sparks coming from any of the wires or coil (or coils) when the vehicle is running. If not, you can put your hand on the coil/coils and wires when the engine is running and see if you feel any small voltage leaking form the tune up parts.
It will leak secondary ignition voltage from the tune up parts caused by high resistance from carbon tracking if they are bad. This is very common if the tune up parts are not changed regularly!


If any is found, the tune up parts are simply bad and will need to be replaced! If none is found than you can spray a mist of water on the tune up parts when the engine is running and see if that causes the engine to stumble or run rough at all. Again, if it does, the tune up parts are bad and will need to be replaced.

1994 k1500 runs fine when idleing but stumbles when given gas.


sparkplugs,spark plug wire and cap and rotor,if anything the stumble is from sparkplug wires

Is p0304 code basically a tune up?


P0304 stands for #3 cylender is misfireing.
Cuases can be.
1. Bad spark plud wirers
2.badspark plug
3.vacuum leak
4. a leaking intake manifold
5.headgasket leak
6. bad cylender rings
7.bad coil

04 montero sport stumbles off idle like it has a misfire already replaced plugs and wires


Is it kicking a check engine light? If so tell me the code and I can help. Its most likely a bad coil, or bad cap / rotor based on what you have already replaced. If you plugs were not properly gaped that could cause the issue as well.

Hi, multiple cylinder misfire, is when the engine cylinders do not fire in the correct order, and do not do it constantly. There is no particular pattern to it. My experience with this condition is that it is usually caused by a faulty ignition coil that is beginning to burn out. It could also be bad wires pluds rotor or cap

Causes Include.
  • Faulty spark plugs or wires
  • Faulty coil (pack)
  • Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
  • Faulty fuel injector(s)
  • Burned exhaust valve
  • Faulty catalytic converter(s)
  • Stuck/blocked EGR valve / passages
  • Faulty camshaft position sensor
  • Defective computer

Possible Solution:
If there are symptoms such as the engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils (a.k.a. coil packs). In some cases, the catalytic converter has gone bad. If you smell rotten eggs in the exhaust, your cat converter needs to be replaced. I've also heard in other cases the problems were faulty fuel injectors.
Random misfires that jump around from one cylinder to another. The underlying cause is often a lean fuel condition, which may be due to a vacuum leak in the intake manifold or unmetered air getting past the airflow sensor, or an EGR valve that is stuck open.

Would crank but would not start in extremely cold weather. Now it won't start at all but fires on and off.


Do a tune-up, Plugs, rotor button and distributor cap. Not sure if your model has a cap or coil pack. When you say fires off and on do you mean it starts off and on or you get ignition spark off and on. If you have a cap, the rotor button can get worn down and not make good contact with the contacts inside the cap. When engine rotates the rotor button rotates inside the cap which produces spark through your plugs wires. If you have a coil pack, it could be going bad. If coil packs get moisture within it and diffuses the spark from going into the plug wires. Moisture and wetness causes a lot of problems with the ignition system, so it's best to apply Di-Electric Grease to the coil pack, wire boots on both ends. The grease stops moisture from getting into the components and sparks from jumping to the moisture.

check egr for carbon build up if it sticks will cause engine to stumble.idle air control will also cause problems of same manner.gaskets are cheap autozone has them.

A P0303 code means that the the car's computer
has detected that one of the engine's cylinders is not firing properly. In this case it's cylinder #3.
Symptoms may include:
  • the engine may be harder to start
  • the engine may stumble / stumble, and/or hesitate
  • other symptoms may also be present
A code P0303 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • Faulty spark plug or wire
  • Faulty coil (pack)
  • Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
  • Faulty fuel injector
  • Burned exhaust valve
  • Faulty catalytic converter(s)
  • Running out of fuel
  • Poor compression
  • Defective computer
If there are no symptoms, the simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.
