Question about 1995 Geo Prizm

3 Answers

Car idles fine, but sputters, bogs and dies if gas pedal is pressed.

I have a 1995 Geo Prizm 1.6. Yesterday while running some errands the car chugged and acted like it was running out of gas then it died and would not start again. Today I changed the PCV Valve and got it to start. It idles just fine but when I try to give it gas it bogs down and eventually dies. After this happens, when I try to start it, it takes a while but will start and idle just fine. If I feather the gas I can tach it out, but if I try to lets say take off normally, it will bog down and idle rough before shutting down alltogether. I've heard the TPS could be at fault, or the fuel filter, or the fuel pump. I just need some more input, any would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Try loosing the fuel cap up about 1/2 a turn and then try it out !
if that works replace fuel cap.

I would say engine vacuum issue .
EGR valve or MAP sensor also ckeck the hose to the vacuum booster control unit for the brakes look for split vacuum lines and leaks .
If thats all OK then its the MAP sensor manifiold absulte pressure

Ah. I did notice on the canister i'm assuming vapor cannister, the bottom hose, which is connected with a hose clamp is broke, I dont know where that hose goes, or anything lol. The cannister thing is located at the top of the engine near the brake booster. Just dont know what its called.

New spark plugs this decade. (a tune up?0
the filter is part of all 60k tuneups. letting it clog wrecks good pumps.
my wild guess, its lack of fuel flow, do to old filter.
or low fuel pressure.
car is identical to a Corolla. so is not unique or rare as some Geo cars are.
the cam belt not changes, invites valve kissing piston tops. BOOM
end of engine. (costs more to fix then worth of car)
the word is bogging, my engine bogs
if if bogs WOT (wide open throttle) and dont catch up < ITS NOT THE TPS. ever.
tps bad causes short bogs, called hesitations.
The map sensor , is what measure air flow and the ECU matches fuel to this air flow.
my guess, is it does that, but fuel pressure is like 15PSI, bad.

I just cranked it up a few minutes ago after it had a few hours to cool and it ran alright until it warmed up. I changed the plugs and wires about 6 months ago, the wires are nice still but the plugs look kind of fouled black and white. So i'm going to start with plugs and fuel filter and keep my fingers crossed lol.

plugs last longer than 6months but black is rich fouling. ever do a cam belt ever? if it slips it will never run right again, or until corrected. the 60k mile service points should not be skipped. this is called misfire, and has 50 causes, i can find it in 1hour or less but I have a full shop of tools. so is the CHeck enigne light on key on, and does it go out running? id check that first. after all if the ECU knows there is a problem why ignore it. i think you have GRoss rich misfire. engine. i do. and we can work that prob, that stallling is same , misfiring, most likely flooding or even just the EGR valve sticking open, as they all do..?

If the check engine light is on you should have the computer scanned for trouble codes. The codes will direct you or a mechanic on where to look for the problem.
Sometimes the problem is low fuel pressure or a dirty fuel filter.

Try exchanging the MAP sensor from the other "good running" car. What I think you are experiencing is a flat MAP which fails to read more than the minimum. A MAP sensor out on these cars will make it run absolutely terrible and die as you have indicated.

By unplugging the TPS sensor you are effectively putting the car in "limp" mode. In this mode it ignores a potentially bad TPS, O2, and MAP sensors and or circuits.

The problem is in the idle air control valve which controls the idle of the motor and idles the motor up when an extra load is put on the motor. It is mounted on the throttle body and is a little round barrel looking item with a plug in on the end of it. change this part out and clear the engine code in the computer and it should fix the issue.
