How to find coolant leak?

Recently I got a warning light for low coolant. I looked and indeed it looked low. I've added, The light went away but once in a while when I check I see levels low, so I keep adding it. This morning after a 15 min drive I noticed steam/smoke coming from under the hood. There was also a sound of boiling/hissing from the engine area but I could not see where it was coming from. I think it may be a hose of the radiator leak, but I'm not sure. How do I check/fix?

If you find a leak in the plastic part of the rad (i.e. cracked) then copper based additives will not seal it better to go with high heat epoxy but make sure the area around the crack is thoroughly clean and well roughened with coarse emery paper, hope this helps.

Start it and look at it while its running. Also try giving it gas to raise rpm's. You should see it then.

Testimonial: "Thanks. If I determine it is the radiator, should I give it a try to seal it with one of those copper-based additives?"

If the radiator has a leak stop leak may work, but usually better to do a real fix. New car radiators often have plastic tanks attached to a metal center core, and the press fit "fingers" which hold the core to the plastic tanks loose tension over time and start to leak. Best fix is a replacement radiator made of all metal like the old ones, if you can find a source.

I have a 96 cadillacsls that is over heating- no leaks but it is pouring out the over flow tube?

Did you over heat warning message come on " Urgent shut off engine" or check coolant message? My coolant message came on but once car warmed up, it was late summer. No leakage but coolant level was low; added some coolant. Then it happened again but once car warmed up the check message disappeared. Then a few days later I got the Urgent Shut off Engine message! Thankfully I was able to pull off road and shut down immediately. Had it towed to Caddy shop. My water pump had gone out. New Pump and replaced all hoses. Then a year later check coolant light came on again, once car warmed up, light went off. This time tho a small leak in the radiator. My husbank put in a new radiator. Car has 117K miles and a few weeks ago outside temp 35, running late for work and didn't allow car to warm up but just a minute or two and when I puled away the check coolant light came on; but once the car warmed up (temp gauge needle in center) the light went out. Being the car is 17 years old I try to treat her like a baby and not push her so I do let the engine warm up before driving away. Do you have to add oil between oil changes? This is normal for the Northstar engine; your regular garages or full service stations don't know this; also make sure if you aren't using an authorized Cadillac garage that they put the right amount of oil; they want to put less than what is required. Not sure if this is really a solution more comments than anything... :)

Does my coolant tank need repair or do I just need to add coolant?

do not use water. During freezing nights, the water could freeze. when water freezes, it expands. when it expands it can crack your engine block. Do you see anything leaking under the car when its running? Does your car constantly blow smoke out the exhaust?

Ok, In the past week, a lot seemed to be going wrong with my car all at once!!!! Okay, first of all, when I start my car, the RPM's are unusually high. Secondly, it seems to have troube accelerating....

1st you need to pressure test the cooling system.if your adding coolant that often it should'nt
be to hard to find where its going. if its not showing up on the ground then start looking internally.
not sure what the codes were but by your description(two OC Censor warnings)it probably an
O2 sensor code. this would be another clue that coolant is contaminating the sensors. the sensors
are screwed into the exhaust system so the coolant would have to be getting into the exhaust.
i would pressure test the system.pull all the spark plugs & see what they look like ie. are they
burning coolant??i would think alot if not all your problems are related.
what mercury are you driving?? year.make, engine size & miles

Low coolant light came on 1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette, went out a couple minutes later without adding any coolant. Adding a little anyway after light went out. Now about 1 1/2 weeks later light came on...

If its not low on coolant and the light continues to come on it is the low coolant sensor in the radiator. This sensor is in the plastic side of the radiator and just pops off. These sensors are always a problem and don't always require replacement of the sensor. What happens -especially if you are using red DEX-COOL coolant is that the coolant gets hard and crusty inside the sensor and wont allow the coolant to enter and make contact with the sensor. Simply take the sensor off and blow compressed air or water pressure in it to free it of debris. Easy fix-hope this helps!

Hello what i would do replace the fluid level run your car with the heater on hood up watch under your car for any fluid leaking if so try to determin about where it is coming from one of the hoses could have a small hole or a clamps not tight enough the right way is with a pressure checker but this is the best way for non proffesional rule out all hoses clamps and over flow bottle leaks before you start replacing parts goodluck please rate thanks
