The purpose of turning the key on three times is to allow the fuel pump to to pressurize the fuel line and fill the filter.
If you just try to start the car the first few seconds will be spent filling the lines and filter. And if the car does not start after several seconds many cars will shut down the pump until the key is cycled again.

this could be a couple of things first check that your battery connectors are clean , next think about replacing fuel filter. Third is to when you go to start you car turn the key to the one position and let the pump prim the fuel lines for a second before starting it up in the morning that could be the problem.

1999 Mazda 626 will not start after been driven for a while. Let it stand a while it will start up with no problems. Drive for a few weeks and again it happens. This has been going on for a year now a

First I would check for any 'codes'. You say "it will not start"....does this mean that the engine will turn over and not run, or you turn the key and nothing happens? Really need more information.

My 1999 Nissan Wingroad starts fine in the mrning going to work but after work when I try and start it I have to turn it over for ages before i starts ... any ideas?

Oh yeah ! listen.
Check your fuel pressure first. If it is weak, and you have a fuel filter outside the gas tank. Replace it.
Could also be your fuel pressure regulator , or your fuel pump. Hope this helps.
If I got you right, You drive to work and park it. later on in the day you try and start your car, and it takes a long time before it does start. Try this next time it happens . Turn your key to where the lights turn on in your dash. Count to 3, shut off the key and turn the key on again for another 3 secs. Shut it down again and on the third time turn it over and see if it starts then. If so , it is a fuel pressure problem. As soon as you turn off your key turn your key to on right of way... Good luck.

My 1997 chevy tahoe will not start.I checked the fuel filter by takeing the fuel line off at the filter and turn the ignition switch, and fuel pump out.How and what do I need to use to check it properl

if there is no fuel coming out of the fuel line with the key on than I would say your on the right track. The next step would be to make sure you have power to the fuel pump. Power to the pump is supplied by the grey wire. If there are two grey wires it will be the larger of the two. There should be power for 3-5 seconds when the key is turned to the run position. There should be power all the time when the key is in the crank position.

If there is power than try whacking the center of the fuel tank with a rubber mallet while somebody tries to start the vehicle. If the vehicle starts than replacing the pump immediately! You don't get that "get out of jail free" card twice!!

Wont start after it ran out of gas after I filled it with gas

Cycle the key several times to the run position and then back to the off position to try to bleed the air out it. Let it sit for about 30 seconds between cycles. How much fuel did you put in the tank. I would say that you need to put at least 2 gallons in it. You may need to change your fuel filter. When you ran it our of fuel you clould have picked up crud off the bottom of the tank and plugged the filter. You mave have damaged the fuel pump. Remove your gas cap and have a helper turn the key to the run position not start position. You should hear your pump buzzing. If you don't hear it I would suspect that something is wrong.

I own a 1999 Saturn. I can start it and drive maybe a mile or two and if I come to a stop it will die on me. I does not spit and sputter it is almost as if someone has turned off the key. I can not start...

sounds like your fuel pump is going out cuase not getting fuel and dies if filter was replaced how long ago fuel filter replaced becuase if you have got bad gas could have clogged fuel filter again with debris try this turn the key to start position but dont start it and see if you can hear the fuel pump and if it is weak hope this helps turn key off then on wait till fuel pump kicks off then do it again then try start it if starts right away is a weak fuel pump cuase manually priming it

Hi I have a mazda 323 lx 1.3 liter 1999 Car turned

Hi there,

Before you do any further investigation, have your vehicle's On Board Diagnostic codes read first - this will determine if there is an electrical circuit malfunction (i.e. fuel pump etc) and will locate the culprit.

Another simple test procedure as follows (in this order):

To test if the fuel pump is operational, turn the key to "ON" (not start) and listen for a "whirring" sound near the petrol tank (operates for about 1sec). If whirring sound is present, the pump is considered working correctly. So in this instance, next check the operation of the fuel pressure regulator and/or check for a blocked fuel filter.

If however, whirring sound is not present, then have the fuel pump "relay" (this relay activates the fuel pump with every key on) checked first.

Cheers,

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee stalling and not starting

Since you've replaced many of the usual suspects (fuel pump etc.) you might want to look into testing or simply replacing the crankshaft position sensor or the camshaft position sensor. If you intermittently lose one the these signals it would cause the problem you describe.
