What happens when starter solenoid goes out?

Is that the solenoid mounted on the passenger side of the engine bay? If that fails, power will not go to the starter. Usually the solenoid is case grounded, meaning it must be tightly connected to the frame or fender where it mounts. The small wire on it should have power with the key held in start. If it does, and solenoid won't click or pass power to the starter by the large cables attached, the solenoid must be bad.

1997 Ford Ranger 2.3L Hard Start

I love my Rangers, and it sounds like you need a new starter drive, better know as the bendix. It is cheaper to buy a new starter. As far as the door locks, I would get the starter fixed first and the door lock problem may go away. sounds like the starter is dragging the power down and could cause a number of strange thing to happen. Hope I have help you solve your problem. I think It will.

Starter Repair on 2000 Ford Ranger

The easest way to find the starter is to open the hood and have some one crank the engine while you watch. If all else fails follow the positive cable from you battery it may go to the silonoid on the fire wall but the positive cable from the silnoid will go to the starter hope this helps
