Question about 1987 Ford Ranger

7 Answers

2.9L ranger surging, misfiring, and running rough. Engine shakes but idle is usually **** near perfect. once or twice it has tried to die while sitting at lights. 5 spd manual

Replaced: MAP sensor New spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor ACT sensor IAC cleaned throttle body tested fuel pressure 30psi at idle has new fuel pump in tank extreme misfire at any speed and major surging. got a little better after cleaning out throttle body but then went right back to doing what it was before. it sat for a couple years so i thought it might have just needed a good run but a few days later i have a worse problem, almost no money left, and no fuel economy. could use some ideas!

Sounds like a MASS Air Flow Sensor, without a scan not sure, you can usually get a free scan at places like auto zone. A remain runs about $41 on ebay.com, a new one around $47 You may try check it first with a can of mass air flow cleaner. You will remove it to clean and being careful not to handle any of the sensitive contact that read the hot air from inside. If it runs better then the fix is temporary and needs to be replaced. If not I would then check the throttle position sensor $20 free shipping on ebay.com.

"Misfire at any speed". First and foremost, you must isolate where this misfire is. What cylinder(s) is(are) misfiring. Remove all spark plugs.

Check and record compression on each cylinder.
Check each spark plug for spark at the tip of the plug.
Check and record manifold vacuum.

Let me know what you find. Do not replace any parts until we find the bad one.

30 psi sounds low, check the spec, I believe it should be higher. Check the regulator and replace the fuel filter if you haven't.

Mine had similar issues with a bad fuel pressure regulator, after being parked long-term - easy to check, see if there is any wet gas in the line between regulator and intake plenum.

If this is bad, part can be replaced with Tomco 21002 or BWD 21855P - make sure you don't let any corrosion form in the fuel rail hole, to seal the o-ring on the regulator.

Mine had a similar problem after long-term storage, and it turned out to be a bad fuel pressure regulator. Easy to check - look for wet gas in the vacuum line between the back of the regulator and the fitting on the intake plenum.

If this is so, Tomco 21002 is a direct fit and BWD 21855P will fit if you salvage the quick disconnect fitting off the old unit. Make sure the fuel rail hole the regulator 'plugs' into does not get even the slightest corrosion before seating the regulator, and use polishing cloth if it does to ensure clean steel.

Rear of the distributor is a small retaining bolt, I believe a 10-mm. While running loosen this bolt and rotate distributor, listening to idel. When you get near what you want use a timing light borrowed from your local mechanic or auto parts store. Timing cam is just forward and left of center of the engine. There is a post with either a hole or a needle to view through. Mark the bell with whiteout at appx 11* btdc. Again with engine running at idle turn distibutor until timing is marked, don't forget to tighten the retaining bolt.

SOURCE: 1988 ford f150 running rough

Might want to change o2 sensor's, If they are not sending the right single its tell the computer to dump fuel. 1988 was using a fuel density system.
(1989 came out with Mass air flow system)
Check this
I think it might have a TFI module that's not working right. Located under distributor. Its gray and about 4" long and if equip, you need a 4 or 5.5 mm tool to unbolt it. This was a common thing back in the 80's. Its been so long I can't remember if the 4.9 straight 6 had it or not.

There is a large vac line coming straight down from the throttle body that goes to the PCV system. See if it has a hole in it. It is likely sucking air.

I have a 99 ford f150. Sometimes it runs perfect, then out of no where when I try to accelerate it vibrates bad and becomea hesitant. When I came to a stop I switched threw all gears and it seems like it...

This sounds like you might have a bad plug wire or something else in the ignition system is arcing to ground. A quick way to verify this is to run the truck in Park at idle. Next, spray the ignition wires with Windex. You'll notice the truck starting to rough up and might even see the bad wire arcing to ground. A complete tuneup would be recommended in this case.
I hope this helps! :)

How do i find a vacuum leak

I think that you should probably look at the engine and transaxle mounts as well as check it for a misfiring cylinder as the cause of imbalance which in turn usually wears out the mount(s) and that then allows the engine to shake even more and that is usually when the problem is then noticed. Vacuum leaks usually will cause a surging idle, not shaking. But you can check for them using starting fluid and just spray it in places where a leak could develop and on all the vacuum lines and listen for an increase in the idle. When you spray where there is a leak, the starting fluid will get sucked in and the idle will rise briefly. However, like I said, I think a misfire and motor mount combination is your culprit so check that first.

Idles roughly, then low when stopped or in park, then dies. Decreasing gas mileage. Slow to accelerate

Sometimes that's caused by a vacuum leak near the manifold area.

Sometimes air in the coolant will cause an idle problem. Air will keep the air temp sensor from sending proper info.
Hope this helps.

Honda accord ex 2001 check engine light suddenly came on, car started to idle roughly

If it's running rough, chances are that it's misfiring. If the Check Engine light is flashing/blinking, it is definitely misfiring.
If that's the case, drive it as little as possible... Or straight to the mechanic because the more you drive it while it's misfiring, the higher the chance is of you ruining your catalytic converter.

Sounds like the idle bypass valve is nfg. Try checking engine codes first. Try this link, you'll find it helpful. http://autorepair.about.com/od/troubleshooting/a/OBD_codes.htm . If you need to know how to check the codes, ask back here, I'll explain. Hope this helps.
