We have the same proplem and replaced the sensor didnt help. Could there be another reason the car will do this? ( this was the one on the front right side of transmission).

SOURCE: shifting gears
the speed sensor is for Overdrive only, it does not shift the gears it sends the signal to the transmission control module that in turn signals the overdrive shift solenoid to engage/shift into OD.

First check fluid level. is check engine light on? is speedometer working? this can be caused by a malfuncition vehicle speed sensor or a mechanical condition such as a clogged filtre.

The shifter itself is quite likely broken. Pressing the brake pedal simply tightens a cable which allows the shift out of neutral to be made. The part runs around $152.00 (as of 06 August 2010) and add roughly 2 hours labor charge to that. The shifter unit is primarily plastic and prone to breaking and IS NOT covered in the lifetime power train warranty which was offered at the time of purchase of the auto... Good luck!
