Hi Kerrie:
Two circumstances are often referred to as "backfiring" but they are really different.
- A "backfire" refers to fire actually burping out the carb and is typically caused by way to advanced timing, or a burnt intake valve.
- Commonly called a "Backfire" is the explosive sound of unburned fuel igniting in the exhaust system. If the vehicle had not been doing this and suddenly started doing it all the time, I'd be suspicious of a bad sparkplug, or a burnt exhaust valve.
A compression test would be a pleasant way to spend an afternoon, and replacing the spark plugs at the same time would round out the fun for the day.
Hope this helps.

If you have done anything to the plugs then check the firing order for the plugs
sounds like crossed plug leads

It's difficult without year make model because things have changed from distributors to fuel injection and distributorless ignition systems

but check

wires ( boot kit for distributorless igniton )
fuel pressure

Look for a silver box. thats the ignition module. I believe its on the firewall. Also do you have all the emissions garb attached to air filter...??? this can also cause an issue. wouldn't see why it would still be installed. But back to my original answer... plugs wires cap rotor first

Without knowing the make, model, year, and engine, all I can do is guess.

Could be timing set wrong. Could be valve timing slipped. Could be fuel problem.

if you never fix the problems , and just clear codes it is only going to keep getting worse . missing and backfiring sounds like you have a timing problem and it will only get worse too .

How to fix a backfiring on a 1983 Chrysler 5th avenue edition new Yorker

If it is backfiring, it is likely that the timing belt slipped a notch and needs to be replaced. Backfiring can cause MAJOR DAMAGE to that old engine so please don't drive it if it's backfiring!

Do you have a SES (Service Engine Soon) light on? Why did you replace the regulator? What were the fuel pressures before and after the replacement? Did you accidentally disconnect a sensor wire or vacuum hose during the repair?

Truck is backfiring and missfiring.

Have the misfire diagnosed and the backfiring will be fixed also. The backfiring is caused by the "over-rich" fuel mixture in the exhaust stream and is igniting within the exhaust. Fix the misfire (which will cause the rich condition) and the backfire will be gone.

Use a gas treatment with a full tank of premium gas and see if it clean out your fuel system. It could also be your MAF sensor. There are ways to clean them but you have to be careful not to damage it.

My 1997 ford expedition has no power when engaged to drive, It drives very slow and backfires also

Hi
The reason for the backfiring is bad connection with the cylinders. Check whether the plug wires going to the right cylinders. If no, correct that to fix the backfiring. Also for power check the choke and fuel filter?
Let us know if you need further clarification.
