Why do I have to put gear in neutral when it won,t start in park?

The neutral switch is loose or needs adjusting. Sometimes you can hold the shift lever hard in the park position and it will start.

Automatic transmission won t shift

you need to replace the NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH (some people call it a PRNDL Switch. Once you get it aligned correctly, all will be well. Install it in Neutral with the Shift indicator in Neutral. Tighten the Bolts and make sure the Park indicator is in Park and the movement of the Cable is correct. you may have to make multiple attempts to get it right.

If it won't shift from park my first question would be how do you get it Into neutral? Sounds like you may have a gear selector sensor issue .

2008 impala won't start or shift out of park, key is difficult to remove from ignition.

Sound like a problem with the Neutral Ssafety Switch, this is located on top transmission (generally) and its possible that need some adjust.

My 99 Cavalier will shift into gear but will not release the wheels to roll forward or reverse even in Neutral.

FixYa is a site for helping people solve their problem. Your statement has so many factual non-sequiters, I connot understand the problem. So it will shift into gear but won't move even in neutral...??...Is your emergency hand-brake off?
Please restate your question and provide clarification.

Won't go into 4 low

Have you tried shifting the automatic transmission to neutral, or if manual transmission- place shift lever to neutral position, then shift the transfer case to neutral position wait a couple seconds then try shifting to 4 low- if you have manual hubs, engage those last. This removes most of the potential mechanical resistance that should allow for the transfer case to shift.

If it still will not go into 4 low you may be dealing with damaged teeth, bent shift dog or worn internal bearings inside the transfer case. As I recall, that was NOT a shift on the fly transfer case.
