Question about Cars & Trucks

I have just replaced my old battery in my 1995 Chevy Lumina and now the new one seems to dicharge completely over night and sometime even sooner. What could be the problem?

The alternator seems to be working because the battery will completely recharge during operation of the vehicle.

Start the engine. With a volt meter check voltage at the battery. Should be at 13.8-14.5v. If so the alternator is charging so the battery would be the next thing to check. stop the engine. Disconnect the battery and check voltage. It should be 12.8v if it is fully charged. Let it sit over night and check in the am. If the battery is @ 12.5v it is 50% discharged. @ 12.2v 75%. If it is below 12.5v I believe you have a bad battery. New does not mean good. Yugos were new cars once.

Hello Thomas,
Please check all your 12 volt cigarette outlets and make sure nothing is left in them or on over night as something is draining the battery. I have a vehicle that the computer changed how it works, in that the outlets used to turn off when the key was off but now they stay on all the time causing my air freshener to completely drain my battery.
Good Luck!

Could just be a bad battery.

I used to work at an auto parts store, and every once in a while we'd find a brand new battery that simply wouldn't hold a charge.

Had this happen to myself just this past fall. Bought a new battery, within about 3 days, the battery light started coming on. Brought the car back to the service center, and sure enough, they came out and told me the battery would not hold a charge, and needed to be exchanged.

Even a brand new battery does not mean that the battery is good.
Take it back to wherever you got it and have them test it. They can tell you if the battery is any good or not, and whether it's the battery or if it's the alternator.

If a diode is out in the alternator it will possibly charge the battery but also let it drain off overnight hence dead in morning

I have a 2003 Chevy Silverado 2500. Once again, it wouldn't start. The battery was completely dead, and it would not even start with a jump. Replaced the battery, started fine. But, now the voltage...

Battery was completely dead ? after how long , over night , or just out of the blue ? These year GM vehicle's 03 to 06 have instrument cluster problems , draining the battery . Do you know what parasitic draw is ? Google it . They used lead free solder constructing the electronics , an after a while it causes silver migration .

We have a chevy 1995 chevy lumina the head lights go out during long drives at night == now either the lights are tired or I have a problem. Also where is the fuse box on this van.

Sounds like a charging problem. I would have the alternator and battery checked out. Most places do this for free. Places like auto zone or les schwab. Your fuses are located drivers side underneath steering wheel to the left.

I have a 1995 Chevy Lumina with the ''Low Oil'' light on.

may be the oil sending unit is bad
may be the oil pump
is there any noise in the engine?
have the oil pressure check at a repair shop to make sure you have enough oil pressure
if it's ok then have the shop replace the switch while they have the old one out to check the pressure

Door mirrors on chevrolets tend to be model and year specific. the auto recycler can tell you for sure since most carry a book which shows what parts will interchange with what car.

Does it have the anti-theft system, if so check for the two wires that go to the ignition switch and make sure they are not broken. If they are they will need to be fixed in order to get it too run again

Chevy lumina 1995 van

I have a 96 Chevy Lumina with an electric sliding side door. A few weeks ago we started having problems with it. I went to work and when I got ready to leave it would not start. I had to have it jumped. Got home and let it set over the Thanksgiving weekend. Went to start it the Mon/Tues after and nothing. Let it set another week and still nothing. We jumped it again and it took 15 minutes to get enough of a charge in the battery to get it started. Took it to a battery store and they checked the battery and said that was the problem. We replaced the battery (it wasn't that old) and went home. A few days later it wouldn't start again. Could this problem have anything to do with the electric slinding door? if so, any suggetions on how to fix it?
