My 2004 jeep grande cherokee won't start..gear shift was locked and dash lights come on.

Do you know how to test electrical circuits with a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter ? Viewing wiring diagrams to see what all is involved in the starter electrical control circuits would be the first place to start . What engine does it have ? 4.0 or 4.7 L Do you have a anti-theft light lit on the instrument cluster ? Some vehicles won't enable the starter if anti-theft is active . Looking at a wiring diagram i see the starter relay is controlled by the PCM - engine computer . Gear shift locked ? Your vehicle has a safety system that won't allow the gear selector to be moved from park unless your pushing the brake pedal . shift interlock system . Is the battery fully charged ? Do you know how to check for codes on you jeep ? Turning the key on & off then on & off an then on ,an leaving it on will put the vehicle into diagnostic mode an show codes in the odometer on the instrument cluster .

My jeep 1999 Jeep cherokee 4.7l ltd will not crank. The check gages light came on. Jump staring will not help. I bought a new battery problem not solved. please help!

If the engine will not turn over,if the starter does not turn the engine, then tap on the starter with a hammer, lightly, while trying to start it,if it starts, the starter is bad.

My jeep has had trouble starting. It turns over

First check the battery you may have fried one of the cells this would have made the pop sound, take the battery out to have it checked at a parts store, Also do this check if the battery is good, with the lights on and heater fan on have an assistant turn the vehicle over while in the front to observe the headlights if they dim considerably it's a battery or starter if the lights don't dim there is a bad connection or bad starter solenoid or in line fuse link, follow the starter wire and check for the presence of bad connections or bad fuse link on starter and solenoid wires.

Jeep won't turn over

Check for a Starter Relay. If you replace this Relay and it still will not start You will need a new Starter.

Jeep wount start

When you turn the key on all the lights come on normally? and when you try to start you lose the lights and hear a click? If so the battery cables are loose, or broken. If thats not the case it could be a relay or stuck starter or switch. You can try a screwdriver at the starter hit the little wire and the big wire it will spark and should turn the engine over "MAKE SURE IT IS IN PARK WITH THE BRAKE SET" do this last, if you do all that and it turns over you can say the starter and cables are good. Next replace relay and try, still nothing get a new switch. Hope this helps.

Jeep won't start has power to lights but won't turn over

The starter is a good possibility. Try tapping the starter with a small hammer while trying to start it. Sometimes the brushes in the starter get dirty and tapping it will jar them loose. If the jeep starts then replace the starter. If the jeep does not start, take a test light and see if you are getting voltage to the big nut on the starter while trying to start it. If it's getting 12 volts and the jeep does not start, then replace the starter.
